I discuss and push SATA drives a lot on these forums, but you aint’ gonna get 2K with current cheapo SATA drives – you need a big mama drive array, like the new big HUGE SYSTEMS drive array. A single 14 drive XServe RAID will not be fast enough for 2K files.
You say “low cost”, but working in 2K with a SR5500 is not low cost. The ONLY thing low cost about 2k is the Kona 3 card (those crazy AJA guys !).

what version an MAC OS are you running. I used to see older versions of FCP just “close” all by themselves. To get VTR control from your 2650, you do need to select an EASY SETUP that corresponds to your Beta VTR – have you done this (and of course, follow the advice of trashing your preferences).

FW800 is not the miracle storage device, aside from the fact that the MAcBookPro does not have native FW800 ports.
Your company is the prime future user for XDCamHD, P2, and other “instant” technologies. So how do you get your old beta gear to act just like XDCamHD and P2, for instant gratification?

This is the “common knowlege” way of working for TV production – I am not saying that it is right – but this is what everybody does. Since almost everyone shoots HD at 23.98 for the “film look”, please tell me the reason why someone would not want to edit this 23.98 footage at 59.94, if it going to wind up on TV (or a training video, or conference room, or DVD or web video). Sony charges $10,000 for the SR5500 option board, just to get the pulldown option so you can input at 59.94.

You want to FILM OUT at 24. You shoot in 24. The AJA works at 24. When you are ready to dump, you can rent a Sony HDW series VTR to record at 24, or take your hard drive to a place that can print to film from it. Why on earth would you want to do the pulldown to 59.94 when you shot on 24, and you need to release on 24. You are getting stepping because you are putting a 59.94 clip into a 23.98 timeline.Here I rant about how people should only work in 59.94 because 99% of us finish for TV – but you are finishing for film – stay in 24. And since you need a film out- because this is for theatrical release – I know that you can afford to rent a HDW-F500 or HDW-M2000/10 for at least one day to dump out before it goes to a tele-kine.

Since money doesn’t matter, and you have an unlimited budget, you should purchase an AVID Adrenline HD system running on a HP xw8200 computer, with about 2.5 Terabytes of storage. This is what most TV stations use today, and it will do HD that is accepted by every TV station, as well as Standard def. You can also get Adobe Production Studio that has Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustratior, etc. If you need audio, get a Pro Tools system -a small system like an 002 which runs Pro Tools LE will work just fine for you.
There are many variables, and they are all based on price. If price is no issue for you, get the above equipment, and you will be very happy.

The equipment and software that you discuss costs a lot of money. Your computer is broken, and you cannot afford a hi speed internet connection. I suggest that you get an entry level job at a TV station or video production company. This way, you can get experience using this equipment, and won’t have to pay for any of it.

The people that participate on this forum might comment “well, if you had read some of the recent posts, you would have known about the 2 Gig limit on the MAC Pro” – but I can fully appreciate that fact that this RAM limitation is still not worked out fully yet, and it is a shame that we have to suffer thru this. We can’t all read every post.
With this said, I am glad that Gary isolated this problem for you. And this reinforces the fact that the NEXT GENERATION MAC or the next generation OS (Elephant, Leopard, Warthog) will screw everything up all over again.
