yes, you are correct – Sony will SOON release the HVR-1500, which is an HDV VTR that has HD-SDI built in to it.

    1) this VTR is not released yet.
    2) this VTR will cost more than a HVRM-15U or HVRM25U, and there will always be the people that simply will not want to spend the money for the HVR-1500. So thank God that products like the HD10AVA and Convergent Design HD-Connect-MI exist.

    Greg –
    do this.
    1) eject the tape out of your Beta VTR
    2) make sure the Input Select switch is on Y Pb Pr (not composite)
    3) plug a TV monitor into the video output of your Beta VTR
    4) put your VTR into LOCAL
    5) hit the red RECORD button on your Beta VTR – it should light up.
    6) close Final Cut Pro
    7) launch the AJA Control Panel
    8) to go the CONTROL TAB, and select TEST PATTERNS (like bars)
    9) go to the analog out tab, and make sure Beta component is selected at 525.
    10) if you still don’t see a picture, look behind your Beta VTR – there is often a tiny switch that selects between the YRB BNC inputs and the round silver connector component input.

If you still dont see a picture do this –

    1) take the Y Out of the AJA and stick it right into your TV composite video input. You should see the test pattern color bar signal in black and white on your TV.
    2) if this works, your VTR is broken
    3) if this does not work, you need to hire someone to come in and help you troubleshoot the AJA issue. There are milions of variables here, which can be a bad AJA card, a bad AJA cable, a bad cable going to your TV, etc.

I agree – send a tape – its DIGITAL – you are not losing anything. And if you dont’ and he gets your drive media, he will complain saying “I can’t mount your drives on my XP system, what should I do now”. SEND A TAPE.

In downconverting from HD – it doesn’t “mostly work” – it works 100% of the time, if you have a 59.94 HD sequence – even if you have 23.98, you can go into the audio/video settings under playback, and select a 29.97 output, and it will downconvert. This works for 1080i and 720p formats. It works 100% of the time – no excuses.

YES – absolutely. You go into the Kona Control panel, make sure you are downconverting to 525, and in the analog out tab, make sure it’s set for Beta component.

you have not given any details of your system – what MAC, what version OS, etc. How your system is cabled.

Is your Beta VTR Input Select switch on Y Pb Pr, or is it on Composite or S-Video ? It must be in component, and you must have the outputs of your AJA
Kona LH or LHe or LS or LSe plugged into the Beta VT inputs. Look at the VIEW menu, and select EXTERNAL VIDEO – is it selected to ALL FRAMES, or is it select to OFF. If it’s off, you don’t get no video oupput. This was a common bug in FCP 4 and 4.5.

the CalDigit will ABSOLUTELY do uncompressed HD. I have just tested it with both AJA and Blackmagic hardware on both a MAC G5 dual 2.7 and MAC Quad.

    Hi David –
I am not sure what you do for a living, or what your background is, but many of your comments indicate that you do not have exposure to a professional environment. Sony makes professional LCD monitors for this application – they are called the LUMA series, like the LMD-232, which compete with the Panasonic BT-LH2600W. The products you are discussing are consumer products. I would like to stress to you that anything that you can purchase at Circuit City, or Best Buy, or CostCo is NOT PROESSIONAL EQUIPMENT. Anything you see at PROFESSIONAL DEALERS, or advertised on Creative Cow, or professional trade magazines, is oriented towards PROFESSIONALS. This is not to say that there is no use for consumer TV’s in conference rooms, or even as a client monitor in an edit suite – but PROFESSIONALS use expensive equipment, with all the cool features that are required by us. This is why we charge LOTS OF MONEY to do the job that a high school student tries to do with crap that his mom buys him at the local stereo store. As our market changes (or converges), you will find pro-sumer gear that is very useful at music stores, or the Apple Store at the mall as well.

Sony’s hype of HD is unimportant when it pertains to their consumer line. If you would like to discuss the Sony LUMA series, which is a professional
HD LCD monitor, I would be more than happy to discuss this.

    Hi Sterling –
I don’t know what equipment you own, but I am going to ASSUME that you own an HDV camera or HDV VTR. If you have a Kona LH or Kona LHe, you can input the analog HD signal into FCP as DVCProHD – NOT VIA FIREWIRE !!!!!! Via the BNC connectors. FORGET FIREWIRE – make believe it does not exist.

For the Kona 2 or Kona 3, if you own a HDV camera or HDV VTR, purchase the AJA HD10AVA, which will transcode the analog HD Y Pb Pr signal into HD-SDI, and embed the analog audio, so you can put this directly into your Kona 2 (or Kona 3).

FORGET FIREWIRE exists (unless you own an AJA I/O box, and use it for this application only).
