why are you blaming Cal Digit. Do you think that Sonnet, G-Tech, Lacie, Active Storage, Apple (yes Apple) are supporting their products after they become obsolete ? Try getting Apple to support an Xserve RAID. Let’s look at host controller cards – both ATTO and Highpoint both make 3g host cards that there is no more support for.(example, the wildly popular ATTO R380 – no more support for Yosemite or El Capitan). And why should they ? So that you can keep making money, while they work for free writing free driver software for you?
Cal Digit is a great company. Buy some new equipment, and get ready for it to be obsolete. Your examples are ridiculous. 12G drive technology is available from all RAID manufacturers now (Areca, ATTO, Highpoint, all the chassis companies), but there are no 12G drives. And when the 12g drives come out, the 6 g drives that you are buying TODAY will be obsolete. This is exactly what happened in 2011, when 6g drives were released, and people said “but I just bought 3g drives last week, or last month – what do I do now ?”.
Welcome to the technology business. Cal Digit has done nothing wrong. All companies do this.

But there is an answer, which does correspond to this forum.
stop being a lazy ass and BACK UP YOUR FILES, and make this a part of your life. I don’t care if it’s on DVD, hard drive, LTO, or something, but stop relying on other people to make your life worthwhile and safe. You can backup your own files, and keep them safe – much more secure than any cloud site.Let me be clear about this. Backing up your files – particularly your financial information – is more important than seeing your mother/father/wife/child in the hospital when they are critically ill. Because when you get killed in a car accident on the way to visit them in the hospital, and then your files for whatever reason are GONE, then they are left with nothing. Which means that you just screwed over your entire family. So there is NOTHING IN LIFE more important than backing up your files.
With that said, the best cloud service in the entire world is at the mercy of your local cable provider. So unless you are willing to move to Kansas City or Austin Texas where you can have a true fiber connection from Google, instead of the horrible service that both you and I both have, there is no “best cloud service in the United States”. Want the best cloud service – move !

if you can setup a robust 1G network, then you can setup a robust 10G network. It is not difficult to learn (or no more difficutl to learn) how to setup a Synology, or QNAP, or other home made system, compared to learning Davinci Resolve, or Adobe Premiere, etc. The only difference here is that most of the readers of Creative Cow are editors, many who are small business owners, who have put the effort out to learn AVID Media Composer, or Adobe Premier, or Maxon Cinema 4D or Adobe After Effects, or Davinci Resolve. And they are involved with production as well for their clients. But they are on tight budgets, and so they would rather DIE than to hire someone that knows how to do this. That is where my condescending comments come from. I assure you that YOU can learn how to do this, no different that you learned FCP 7 or Adobe Premiere, etc. but you are busy, and you (or Jonathan) just say “why can’t I just plug this stuff in, like a firewire drive, and have it just work !”. Well, you can’t, that’s why. All of these systems are stable once they are SET UP correctly. NONE of these systems (except XSAN) require constant administration. So if you A) buy a system, and set it up correctly (which happens when you read all the manuals, suffer thru the installation, and finally “get it”) – then you will have a nice stable system that requires not constant administration, or B) you hire someone to do this for you, and then you have a nice stable system that works day in, and day out, and requires no administration.Let me tell you something, Adam. I am not a plumber. I had a toilet installed. The flapper failed, and I hired a plumber to change the flapper. So now it’s 3 months later, and it’s making noise, and occationaly not letting me flush. If I screw around with it, the water comes back in the tank, but I am sick of this. Why can’t my toilet work 100% of the time, without having me hire another plumber, which will cost me MORE MONEY when it should have been done right the first time, so I don’t have any of this aggravation ? Same with these 10G networks. You can do it – and it might work – kind of – but if you hire a professional, or buy one of the systems that you see advertised on Creative Cow, from a pro company, you wil have a nice working system, with no aggravation, and you will be happy. But if you say “no, I am going to buy a cheap QNAP/Synology, and set it up myself” – then you might have aggravation. NOW, you can sit there, and tear thru web URL’s trying to find out why things are not working like they should. And you can post on Creative Cow, and say “I just bought this NAS from B&H Photo for 1500 bucks, and it seemed like it was working, but now everything is locking up”. Simple answer – study the manuals and YouTube videos, or HIRE A PROFESSIONAL – and if you cheap out (like I did with the toilet plumber), then you get a running toilet. It flushed, but it pisses you off.

no matter what you buy, if you don’t have 8 drives running together as a RAID, your system will never be fast enough to support 3 users trying to share ProRes media at the same time.

Can one computer plug into an external harddrive and the rest connect via ethernet to share? Will that be fast enough?answer – no. You can buy a small NAS system (remember, 8 drives minimum), and you can accomplish what you want. But you need a switch (and not a $50 switch from stables) to distribute to your 3 users. And who is going to set this up for you ? Will they do it for free ? Are you looking for advice on “what box can I go out and buy, just plug in my 3 computers, and I am instantly sharing all the media on the drive, without any complex setup” . Well, that doesn’t exist. So the answer is – NO, you can’t pull this off for $3000 at the end of the day.

yes it can be done, and it can be done in your price range.
Exactly what dealers have you contacted so far, and what have they suggested to you. Every brand you see here on Creative Cow will do exactly what you want, in the price range that you want. There is only one thing that you can’t do – order “a box” from a mail order company, plug in your two Mac’s and have it work instantly without talking to a dealer or someone that does this. The desire of “can’t I just buy a new Mac Pro, plug in two thunderbolt cables, and BAM, everything just shares” – that doesn’t exist. but your concern should be “how much will this cost me”, and there is no question that what you want can easily be accomplished with your budget.It’s very easy and inexpensive to order a toilet, but if your not a plumber, you are not going to get your toilet to work.

You need to setup a server (just a mac) to share your RAID 6 drive array between 2 computers. It’s cheap and easy to do this. And you already own most everything to make this happen.Bob Zelin
