Areca with SSDs or HDDs?
Hi all,
First-time poster. Please be gentle. Working on a maxed-out late-2014 iMac 5k and need to get a RAID set-up for 4k workflows (using Adobe CC).
I have decided to purchase this Areca 8-Bay Thunderbolt 2 RAID Enclosure – https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1032197-REG/areca_arc_8050t2_8_bay_thunderbolt_2_raid.html
And I am now deciding between…

OR…

As you can see, 8TB of SSD storage comes to $2,800 while 32TB of HDD storage is $2,000. Looking at the HDDs, that’s obviously four times the storage capacity for $800 less, and what I’ve been reading online from guys who have similar set-ups is that the HDDs are getting sustained 900+ MB/s throughput, and the SSDs are getting around 1,200, so I’m trying to decide between the extra speed (and reliability?) of SSDs vs. the extra space and cheaper price tag of HDDs…what do you guys think?

thunderbolt 2 has a max theoretical bandwidth of 1375 MB/sec. So they could come out with drives faster than SSD, and you still could not get any bandwidth faster than 1375 MB/sec (in real life, a RAID 0
on Thunderbolt 2 is 1300 MB/sec). In a RAID 6 configuration, it more like 1000 MB/sec. So if SATA is giving you 900 MB/sec in RAID 6, and you get 4 times the storage for less money, why wouldn’t you do that ?Bob

thunderbolt 3 is a lot faster.

the only way right now to get thunderbolt 3 is a hackintosh. But I think my point was, it will get mainstream pretty soon and macs will eventually join the club. areca said they will ship in a few months. Hope for the best!
