I read a bunch of threads on this before my upgrade, and went this way:
1] buy a new drive, install along with current system drive. [fyi, i had to format it w/ Panther – Tiger woouldn’t install on blank drive]
2] install tigger on new drive
3] after install is done, tigger will see your old system drive & ask if you want to copy user data, applications, etc. say yes.
4] done
In the 25 (?) years I’ve pummelled computers of all OS’es, this was FAR AWAY THE EASIEST upgrade I’ve EVER done. MS needs to take a page from this chapter. KUDOS TO APPLE.
There are cheaper ways to upgrade to Tiger, but this appears to be the easiest & most successful. -
I’ve noticed occaisions where a gap has caused a compression, based upon a QT reference of that timeline, to lose audio/video sync. After finding the matchframe where sync was lost, it turned out to be at a gap in the TL. So now I fill all gaps.

Wacom Intous if you have bucks to burn or if you are an artist (or aspire to be one), the Graphire series otherwise. I use a 6×8 Intous. Love it & the pen, but man oh man does the Wacom mouse suck!!!! Awful ergonomics. Got a Logitech MX500 (*best* ergonomics, IMHO) on the side for mousing. Spent a bunch of years editing on Quantel kit, which was designed for tablet… always seemed so elegant and fluid.

Steadicam. wooty. I’ve owned a JR for like 15 years, and it’s been fantastic with the DV cams. I’ve always wanted to get a vest unit, but never had the scratch to spare. BUT, I can say that a handheld unit (like the JR) is only good until your arm tires out. So, I’d go for a vest if I was buying now. Trouble is, it takes quite a bit of time to get proficient with these things, and you won’t know if a unit is good until you’ve “flown” it for awhile. I’d assume the Steadicam units, though the most expensive, are probably at least as good or better than the others. But I’ve also heard good reports about Glidecam. On the plus side, you can probably do without a monitor, as you can use the GL’s LCD. Big $$ saver.

I’ve got the 320R (SCSI/removeable). The only test I ran gave me 9 layers RT DV. Never bothered w/ more testing, as when I’m editing in layers, it’s NEVER simple “boxes on boxes”, it’s fuzzy edges, matte tracks, fx, etc, so “RT layers” is N/A. The array will give the bandwidth that’ll be more than what your G5 can handle. I run it in RAID 3 (for protection), and at 50% capacity I get about 185MB/sec. Can’t say enough good things about Huge support.

As the info sez below, I’m on Huge. Very happy. Certainly pricier than SATA, but cheaper than Fibre or Apple’s RAID. I went Huge for their superb support, and SCSI for RAID 3. Love the security of having data parity. I get about 190MB/s in RAID 3 at about 50% capacity, as well as using it in the slower PCI slot (for compatibility with the DLT on the other channel of the UL4D).

I just got a Wacom Intuos, which has a 5 button mouse & I HATE the side buttons! Click the darn things all the time by mistake. WHY can’t ALL the mouse designers take a hard look at the Logitech MX500/700 5-button mice – they’re SUPERB. Ergonomic and the extra buttons are neatly tucked out of accidental triggering zone. I’m considering returning the Intuos because the mouse is so poor.

Now why didn’t Apple introduce this mouse say, 5 years ago? -
