I’m looking for options for editing desks for our new FCP station. I’ve looked at Winsted and TBC, thanks Mr. Solario, and I like what I see, but I want to check out other options. I need a rather large desk, with a top riser that will handle two 20″ cinema displays and a 20″ Sony broadcast monitor. Please give me some more names of manufacturers to look into. Thanks in advance.

Build It right yourself and save big bucks.. Call your local commercial counter-top/cabinet maker and get one custom fitted.. I built my own out of a $5 auction half rack and a 6 foot dumpstered old main frame rack… and some left over cultured marble counter top pieces/scrap from the local dealer.. The Mac and Medea RTRX are in the half rack, the decks are in the 6 foot rack. But the best part is that I have my 23 inch Cinema display on the desktop (on-top of the half rack conected to the 6 footer)and the Apple display is 15 inches from my nose,,, which means -long hours-no eye strain— the keyboard is in the pull-out drawer with a Wacom tablet and Shuttle Pro on the desk in front of the Apple. I have a 15KDS Lcd to the left of the Cinema display and a Sony 19″PVM on top of the 6 foot old mainframe rack.. Behind the Cinema display I have half a shelf half as wide as the desk top and about 15 inches above, so I can’t knock the Apple on the floor (no Wally drop test here) and the shelf is great for the speakers and visiting clients Hard drives. The shelf has 6 Lacie HDs from a client on it now.. The most exspensive part of building the desk was all the damn black wrinkle spray paint I had to buy to give it that “Industrial Look” and it was a lot of spray paint.. But the desk is great and the editors who have used it love having the Cinema display – Right in front of their nose….

For an inexpensive solution, check out IKEA’s business furniture…much stronger and better than their regular furniture. I have the “Jerker” series desk unit which is fully customizable.
The base price is $129. Once you add all of the options for a FCP setup… you might spend $250-$300. You can see the unit at IKEA.com or I would be happy to email a picture of my setup… I’ve had it for 4 years with no wiggles, wobbles, bows, or defects…normally associated with IKEA furniture.

I bought the main desk (table top and one shelf), two additional shelves for tapes, DVD/CDROMS, and 3 LaCie hard drives; printer swing-out shelf which holds my Sony PVM 15″ monitor; 2 telephone swing out shelves which hold my Alesis monitors, and a monitor shelf which hold two 20″ Dell flat panels– but previously held the weight of two 19″ NEC CRT’s. The main desktop holds my keyboard, Mackie Control Unit, Wacom tablet, and Sony DSR20…as well as telephone, and remote control cup holder. A pull out shelf holds my Mackie 1402 mixer. Hard Drives, G5, Amp, other decks and I/O BOB’s sit in another shelf unit, also from IKEA.

TBC consoles are great…I’ve worked with them outside of my studio. A lot more $$$$ than the IKEA stuff, but its designed for that.

I agree….although I didnt actually build mine, I pieced it together and it ended up costing me under $600, I just went to a office furniture warehouse, they have desks that are just like edit desks without the bride, then just go buy a bridge for $70 from Home Depot…..my desk looks like it was made just for editing…..

I’ve always built my own up to this point, (you can see them on my website) though recently I was at another shop where the Flame artist has a really neat, very old farmhouse kitchen table. It was about 6 feet long and just a very thick butcher block type of top. It really was different and inviting to the client.

So I found a few tables at a local store called Cost Plus World Market and am going to do a similar thing. I have a monitor shelf and speaker stands that will be mounted to the table, but for the most part, it will just be a big table. I like the fact that it’s different and more “client friendly” than a true editing desk. The table will run about $400 plus another $100 to modify.
