The Cloud is a bunch of hot air (as far as video storage for editing goes).

Nothing to see here…. move along….

The Dynamic Link thing in PPro-AFX; MAKE SURE YOU START WITH A SINGLE AFX FILE AND STICK WITH IT FOR THE ENTIRE PPRO PROJECT.

Yes, I shouted that. It’s really darn important. Don’t be saving multiple AFX files for different parts of the PPro project… it’ll end bad. Like Earth splits in two, fire spits out and we all have to board Vogon spaceships bad.

Bummed I couldn’t make it…. had a project that went into (billable) revisions last night. win/lose

Looking forward to the archive of the event, but in the meantime, Walter, I was wondering how your investigation of PPro is going? Haven’t seen a blog update in a bit. I’m wondering how it’ll handle when being “pushed” with many layers, longform, complex timelines. I did a smallish thing on it recently, and found it got a bit wonky after a bit, needed a restart, which is something I’ve never had happen w/ FCP7 (earlier, yes).

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? (ala’ Russell Crowe)

    hehehee

Listen up! The last few posts have not been sufficiently silly enough. I’m calling foul before this thread gets any more serious.

    Right then…..

    wait for it…..

    Aindreas, off you go!

July 22, 2011 at 3:16 pm in reply to: FCPX = Ampex Ace

Started way back on the CMX340x (think that was it) & quads, moved along the VTR timeline & eventually had a suite with the ACE. But the keyboard sure wasn’t the one pictured above…. was QUERTY, I think, with the 8 soft keys along the top.

CMX editors usually dissed it because it wasn’t the same (!), but never took the time to see what it could really do (!).

I had an all-Ampex VTR suite, with GPIs on all the outboard gear, and with the nested edits you could do, it was amazing what 1 editor could control at a time. Had one series where, with the touch of one ACE softkey, an edit would be performed with: 4 VTRs, Chyron (with anim), digi audio cart, ADO trigger, DESAM audio board triggers, D2 speed ramps – and being triggered at discreet times. CMX couldn’t do that (at the time). Even had the video output system on the D2s controlled via hexadecimal in nested softkeys, so I could control levels, etc, on the joystick, without an outboard interface.

Point is, when you dug deep, it was pretty kick-ass.

Which sounds like a nod to FCPX. But, ACE didn’t attempt to change the underlying way we thought about editing. It was more of a different feature-set on top.

    Gimmie 64-bit FCP, thank you.

    July 14, 2011 at 12:39 pm in reply to: RAM for CS – 24, 32 or 40GB?

Thank you Todd. But I realized I made a mistake in my system specs! I’ve got the 8-core, dual CPU, hence After Effects showing 16 CPUs. So by that math, 64GB is my sweet spot.

I’ll make it a 2 step upgrade; 4x8GB now, and then replace the current 4x2GB with 4x8GB later in the year.

    Thanks!

July 13, 2011 at 1:09 pm in reply to: Render All Open timelines

Hey Lou… someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you only need to render TL’s in order to get full-res previews. There’s a check-box somewhere to actually use TL render files as output to an encode. (I’m guessing you’re coming from FCP like me)

As to adding TLs to ME, in Encoder, just add a file, select your PPro project, and a dialog opens showing all your TLs, clips, etc to choose from. Pretty cool.
