    thanx jordan

do you know if anyone is transferring directly to dvcprohd? i think that may be the only deck we can get.

and, as i am in a dark room in minneapolis, chained to my console, and cannot use the phone, 🙂 i was wondering if there are web sites where this is addressed?

other than the awesome creatice cow!

    Hey Herb!

havent seen you since the edit days? looks like you landed on Apples after jumping off edit, huh? same here! It has not been smooth, but i think in all fairness its cuz i never went to fcp school, but i am actually getting the hang of this crazy thing!

your critique of apples attitude sounds right, but i prefer to be even more cynical and or simple:

I think, and i know i am opening the door on all kinds of nasty comments from this forum, that there are 2 reasons that some of the stuff on FCP still doent work,

    1. the program only costs 1,000 bucks, or so

    2. Its not really an editing program, its a marketing vehicle to sell apple computers.

However with most technology, asking the why question (why does this work this way. why does this function operate the way it does) doesnt really help.
primarily cuz theres nothin you can do about it right now, with clients breathing down your back, and a deadline looming

I hope we were able to answer the original user who posed the question fix his problem with solutions to the issue

i mean my biggest why question still is : why did edit die? it was so good!

    Matt

i think we are saying the saem thing

my timeline outpoint is parked on frame x. when i make an edit, i DO NOT want to erase/cover up/eliminate frame x. I want frame x to become the first frame AFTER my edit. ie fcp now erases the frame you see when you mark out on the timeline. to me this is counter to my desire.

However, since mark clip is usually done to replace, as opposed to marking in and out seperately, which is usually done for inserting or overwriting, I would not mind seeing the beahvior of the outpoint change depending on whether you were marking clip OR markin in and out seperately ie mark clip does Not include the shown frame, but mark out does include the shown frame.

    my 2.5 cents

    thanx walter!

all good, however one point perhaps i did not make clear: the Phatom time code breaks every thirty seconds or so have nothing to do with camera start stops! they simply happen! honestly! i go to capture a shot i need, just one response to an interview question, maybe its 2 minutes of answering the question, and i mark in at the end of the question, and mark out at the beginning of the next question, and after i capture it i get an error message saying that a timecode break was detected and you should log and capture yadda yadda….

do you fine this behavior with the m15u? i think the code coming out of the m10 is just flaky?

    wow

not even nine am central time, and already one of my favorite peeves is getting discussed yah!

ok here is the way it should be:

i want to see the inpoint on my source, i want to see the last frame of my source inclusive

i want to see the first frame i am going to overwrite/ripple in my timeline.

i want to see the next frame of my timeline afdter my overwrite, BUT i want to end my edit before that frame, not on it.

i once made a suggestion to toggle the actual frame selected in the timeline outpoint in a preference, like avid does, but everyone jumped all over me like i was suggesting we get rid of the viewer and canvas, and i was getting comments like “oh you tape editors are used to that style of outpoint” and
“how hard is it to back up one frame”

ok, then why does mark clip include it, since the only reason you would mark a clip would be to delete it or overwrite it without taking out the first frame of the next clip. that makes no sense

anyway, thats my story and im stickin to it!

    Walter

Logging tapes was not a problem when using a Beta SP machine, or any machine that was made for linear and non linear editing’

    BUT

logging tapes using a toy deck like the M10U or the camera is not only time consuming..its down right painful!

What deck are you using to capture and log your footage? do you find that you HAVE to mark in and out between the timecode breaks? or can you “Capture Now” and hit escape right after the tc break?

I would love to just dump it all in but for 2 reasons: 1. the m10u cant spit out clean code, so i get phantom tc breaks every 30 seconds or so and 2. In the back of my mind i still want the tc to be accurate so i could recapture the material later, if necessary, either because of major storage failure, accidental erasure, or even altewrnate versioning down the road?

so, if it can work, i would like to have my assisitant just capture between TC breaks using capture now, making sure to start capturing a good 4 seconds after any tc break (real, not phantom) and stopping right after the next tc break. will that work?

thanx for any help you can offer

March 7, 2007 at 8:28 pm in reply to: more “universal” file format out of FCP?

    Hey

using compressor, do an mpeg 1 at 2.00 (or 1.75, whatever the highest bitrate is) make sure its 320 x240 and it will look great!

of course yu can do QT, but everyone we work with 1. has a pc Without QT, 2. doesnt have the saavy to download the right version, nor should they have to. and 3. has their machine behind some firewall that prevents downloads.

you can also do WMV, but now you need to have the right verions of that player.

    same with flash.

we do our clients a service by getting them a clip that they can play with a minimum of fuss hence mpeg1.

and FWIW MPEG1 is fine quality for the average consumer ie client. its only we industry professionals who bemoan its low quality.

THis does not mean we do not provide assets in other flavors, we just use mpeg1 as a universal fallback.

our current preference for best quality is flash via squeeze (the ON2 compressor)

    hope this helps

    Alan

I swapped the keyboard cuts for timecode entry with zoom in out, because i am zooming in and out a lot more than timcode entry

now i just press + or – to zoom in and out, and press command + and command – to enter tc. no biggie

    hope this helps
