    Sorry danny

digibetas actually do not have firewire. they were probably the last sony vtr made without it.

as for capturing the footage, you need a device to convert the digital output of the camera or deck to firewire and then to whatever flavor you want to work with ie uncompressed 8 bit, dvcpro50, whatever

the devices to “transcode” from Digibeta (A.K.A. SDI) are covered very thoroughly here and elsewhere on the cow. the favorite is the Aja IO, or its younger simpler cousin, the IO Ld

    hope this helps

    paulo

acording to my handy dandy “digital heaven disk space calculator” 30 min of 8 bit uncompressed PAL takes up 35.8 gB. (if you would like your own, go to digitlalheaven.com)

uncompressed AVI would probably work fine, do a test to see. I would advice transcoding it OUTSIDE of final cut, either using QT or Windows Media Player for Mac

then at least you do not have to keep rendering your timline.

as far as capturing on a mac, It doesnt need to be just via an aja card. decklink will support it as well, or even an aja IO. any mac with any capture card (or firewire device) should be able to capture dvcproHD, as the codec comes with macs.

It sounds like you have the opportunity to use a PC to capture the stuff. there are DVCPROHD codecs for the PC as well, but you have to pay for them. Raylight is one we use.

    hope this helps

    Hi

use the f key to “match source” on your sequence. it will load the sequence into the source viewer like double clicking does with individual clips.

  • Hi

the only time i have seen fcp add a Letter (as opposed to incrementing numbers) is on the REEL name, and its usually because of time code breaks ie i set an in and out on a tape to capture, but there is a tc break between that in and out, so fcp stops, recues before the break, then captures after the break, but adds a B suffix to the reel name or number.

its actually a good way to keep track of clips that might not recapture correctly.

depending on the number of breaks, it will add C, D, E, and so on.

after the stuff is all captured, you can go into the bin, select the clips that have been B-ed, and change them back to the original number, if you like.

    you can also leave them

i know this may sound like a shill to buy more storage, but i have found that its a real thrash to recapture in FCP, especially with a prosumer deck like M10U (which we have)
I always capture at the resolution i am going to finish at, so i do not need to recapture or if i do, its a minimum amount of material.

    hope this helps

July 6, 2007 at 4:37 pm in reply to: C Roll EDL

    2gatos

the difference between b mode and c mode is the way the edits are sorted In Relation To The
    Record Master.

in a B mode edl the edits are sorted in source reel ascending order

in a C mode edl, the edits are sorted in ascending source order AND ascending record vtr order so that the record machine doesnt have to shuttle back and forth.

For any film to tape transfer a B mode edl will do the job. what the transfer house needs is all the selects in ascending time code oreder

FCP will generate a B Mode edl and that should be fine

for that matter you can drag all your edits from your timeline to a bin, delete all the transitions and audio edits, sort by reel then media start, and export as a batch.

you can then open the batch list in Excel or even word and print it out

    hope this helps

June 26, 2007 at 8:16 pm in reply to: Ripple delete

the only way to get ripple delet to close the gap is to lock all the tracks you do not want to ripple

ie unless you are ripple ing every track, fcp will not close gaps that may result in the un selected tracks “colliding”

if i have a bunch of interviews on v and a1, and i edit a music loop on a2, i cannot ripple delete just the interviews if there is an edit in the music track later than where i am trying to delete. FCP sees this as a collision and will not allow you to ripple.

    does this help?

June 22, 2007 at 1:45 pm in reply to: “Not Found” error

    Kevino

Im just gonna take minute here to share my insight and experience in general, as i have been in your shoes too many times

never never never do reference movies, ever. whether it be nesting, round tripping, exporting for compressor, whatever, always make your precomps or sub timelines or exports self contained or hard exports.. why? because refernce movies are a bluff, they dont work reliably, and they only lead to headaches and heartaches later on. or, if nothing else, superfluos error messages

    that being said

if you can sit there and click cancel each time that message comes up, so as to complete the render you are doing, then you should be fine. the times this has happened to me it has not had dire outcomes ie it seemed my render was fine. I have since learned to just say no to ref movies, so i dont see that error anymore, so i dont have to babysit the effin render or export

if not, you need to go back into your timeline and replace all your reference movies with real movies, such as hard exports etc.

I have refined this process pretty well, and would be happy to share said info. if you wish

    hey

so i just started saving them as aif files. i do not know why it boosts the level when i save it as it came in (fcp captured audio only qt movie) but there you go (actually i do know why, but I do not want to start a ruckus here)

    thanx anyway 🙂

    DRW

I have tried desperately to believe the hype around firewire, and in the end i find thats all it is. I may use a fire wire drive to sneaker net some media around, but i have found issues w firewire that make it unreliable for day to day work.

Besides, if you have a firewire device to capture video on your internal bus, you have to get a card for media drives, as the 2 cannot coexist

we have a promax sonnet sata array on our g5, and it runs like a tank.

we got a 2 drive fw 800 array, and we would lose the stripe set everytime we moved it.

gimme scsi sata or even usb2 anyday over firewire.

    my 2.5 cents
