Not only that FCP represents the ONLY NLE in the world where the OS, Apps and hardware are ALL made by the same company. This fortells faster updates and upgrades with more features coming at you at a faster rate… and making sure that bugs are fixed in a relatively timely manner… all apps have bugs. Premiere isn’t bugless… neither is Avid or any other NLE.

Good Point. However there are those who would say that because Adobe is NOT tied to any specific OS or Platform, they have significant motivation and resources to fix bugs and make great software that stands on its own.

you may be able to do this without media manager

Select all the clips in the sequence, and drag them to a new bin

sort by compressor, and select the low rez clips

drag them to a new bin, and just recapture them.

It would be a good idea to post this question in the ProTools forum, as well as DVD authoring forum. And please let them know you have cross posted.

I am not saying that there is no one here who knows the answer, nor that we dont want to respond, but you will probably get a better response on those forums.

I dont really know the answer myself, but I had no idea what dialnorm was, so hence my reading and response. Now i know that what you mean is Dialogue Normalization.

Oh i am sure that Smoke can “read” the edl ie import it as a text file and such

but what may be happening is smoke is deriving the source footage from whats listed in the edl, which is wrong.

the source out time in an EDL event or events with varispeed is ignored by the linear editor. The linear editor uses the source in time, then plays the source at the speed the “speed trigger” or M2 states.

when you bring the EDL into a Smoke or other NLE, the NLE will capture based on the Source in and Out, which are not accuratly reflecting the True source in and out for the necessary motion effect

THe best thing to do is to add a lot of “handle” onto the captures, so you will have media to
use. (of course, if your varispeed tricks are slow motion rather than speed ups and you are still missing captured footage then its a different problem) 🙂

I know there is a product called Automatic Duck that converts FCP projects to all different project formats, like After Effects. There may be one for Smoke. Its kinda pricey if you are just doing one show, but maybe someone here has a copy and can help you.

When the EDL was first developed there was no provision for variable speed, such as slow or fast motion (the VTR’s of that time did not have the capability, they only played picture in real time)

so each manufacturer of linear edit gear came up with their own way to remeber the motion effects per edit, usually a note attached to the entry in the EDL. the CMX EDL uses “M2” which I belive is actually expressed as Frames Per Second

example:

M2 001 045.0 01:07:50:21

which means i sped up that shot to 150% or 45 fps

When you load this EDL into a linear edit machine, like a SOny 900 or something antique like that, the edit will be preformed correctly

Where is gets dicey is with an NLE. you see, the Record in is right, the record out is right, and the source in is right. The source out is not the actually time, rather its based on the source tape playing at normale speed.

All that being said, what are you doing with the edl?

You would have to use both EDL’s Use the C mode for film to tape transfer, which is what you usually use them for, then use the A mode for the edit.

You could also just generate a batch list from your bin for the Filme to tape.

(maybe I am nuts but any linear edit controller worth its salt could re sort the list for A, B, or C, mode. Heck I think axial could do D mode, which was a mix of B and C)

I am sure there are numbers to crunch that would determine whether or not its feasible, but lemme tell ya this:

We have 2 FCP systems, one on a g5 and one on intel

The Intel is in a Client freindly edit suite with a big screen, comfy chairs, hot tub, some college cheerleaders, and espresso machine, ,where as the other systme is in a dark dank closet with a single bare lightbulb swinging forlornly over the keyboard. 🙂

So once for an unscheduled client review, I had to open a job on the Intel system (hot tub) that had the media residing on the G5 system (dank closet). The DVCpro50 media lives on a 4 drive sata array striped raid 0 on the G5, and the machines are connected gigabit ethernet.

I did not expect to be able to view or play the project with any
stability, but was pleasantly surprised when i was able to play at least 2 streams without rendering.

Even if i had to render, those files would be on my local drive.

Since then i dont move media files around as much as i used to. I open the G5 projects on the Intel and have at it

HOWEVER

I have no idea how this would affect the perfromance of the G5 for editing, AND I have no idea how much I am slowing network traffic OR how much a lot of network traffic would slow me.

AND I really have no idea about capturing this way, so i am not even gonna try

I suppose you could set up 2 systems like we have, capture and edit one one, and just edit on the other, and share the media accros the network. Sure would make it cheaper to connect machines to multiple edit rooms, since you dont need to!

BTW there are at least 2 SAN systems on the market that use Gigabit ethernet as opposed to fiber channel: Editshare and Apace
