    Hey Rafael

I am still getting a Color Gamma mismatch, albeit managable, between FCP Stu 1 and AE CS3.

    Workflow:

    CApture 1080i 29.97 10Bit Unc (Kona lhe)
Export Sheer RGBA 10b 4224, HD Color, Auto RGB
Open in AE CS3 as same.
Do THE AE THANG! using 16bit Precision, but no Color Management
Export as SHeer YCrCb 10b 4224.

I get a Moderate Gamma Shift, but I AM able to compensate using the FCP Gamma Filter

But should i have to? I thought Sheer made it a perfect transfer.

One thing i do notice is even though I am selecting 10b RGB, its showing up in Quicktime as 8b RGB.

    any light you can shed?

btw, when i did a search for Sheer, your posts came up a lot

bbtw, I like the junior editor you got there. Or is he the producer?

first make sure your cables are connected correctly, ie Y goes to Y/G, Y-R goes to Y-R/R and Y-B goes to Y-B/B

What kind of beta deck are you using? If its a PVW or a BVW series, try setting all the video out controls to preset. these should be labeled “video” “setup” “Chroma” and “phase” If you have a UVW series, you will need a remote TBC control

then try changing the aja control panel video in to Analog-Beta

If that doesnt work I would have to see a pic of your bars or something to get a better understanfing of whacked out colors

I use an application called “MPEG Streamclip” which allows you to rip DVD’s, thereby eliminating the need for a dedicated DVD player to digitize with.

Its available at the Apple website

My suggestion would be to do away with the sima for capturing, and connect your beta directly to the KL Box

    hope this helps

It seems people always forget this:

on the KonaLHe control panel (it should be in your Applications folder)
set the component input to Beta (it defaults to SMPTE).

I have found that by setting this to Beta, and leaving the Beta Deck’s Video settings (Video, Setup, Chroma) in preset or unity, the video is almost dead on to the scopes (using colorbars off the beta tapes as a reference)

Other wise, the blacks get crushed, and the chroma gets over saturated.

    Hope this helps

Automatic Duck! (There, I said it!)

FCP’s EDL capabilities were designed for capturing tapes from a VTR to make a master, so any other usage is just gonna take too much time to get right.

If your media composer can work with high or full resolution images, I would just export a TIFF Image sequence out of Media composer, convert it to a FCP Quicktime (on the FCP computer), and do your grading that way. set up your Media Composer timeline to start at zero, make the first frame of the movie start there (no fade up), do the export, then print an edl so you can easily find the cut points when you go to Color it.

    hope this helps

If you copy over an original media clip you captured, can you play that?

If not then I believe Cineform makes HDV codecs for PC. These should allow you to play HDV on your pc.

Hi. I have seen a number of different workflows and all have good and bad sides. Here is what i do. This will be based on my situation, and your may be different.

    1. Capture from tc break to tc break with simple logging. This will allow you to recap later, if need be, but still lets you do all your jog and shuttle in FCP, which is lot better than the HDV deck i use. If you have a more professional VTR, like a Beta SP or a DVCAM deck, then you can do logging off tape, as its easier to shuttle those decks around.

    2. I use the timeline to divide up my clips, backload each clip to the source viewer, then subclip. the subclip will always show up in the same bin as the master clip, but i then edit the various text fields/columns for easier searching later.

    3. once its all broken down, what i call ‘binning” I then sort by a certain column, select it all, and move it to a bin for the same name.
ie all shots I have marked as Scene: Front Desk, i can sort the scene column and there they are. BTW if you hold shift after you click on a column to sort it, you can then sort by a second column, to further refine your sort.

    4. Sometime soon after i am finished capturing, i copy ALL the footage to a second drive, like a My Book, and that becomes my backup.

This method is pretty viable for all the stuff i do, spots, docs, promos, etc.
In case a clip gets corrupted, i dont lose a whole tapes worth of shots.
The time code breaks are clean so i can recapture if needed.
I use the timeline as its faster to subclip than just doing it in the viewer.

    hope this helps

March 25, 2009 at 8:48 pm in reply to: Do I need / how do i use a TBC ??

    Rory

Even running it through the UVW has sometimes fallen short for me. When i have to deal with VHS footage, I record it onto a BetaSP Tape using my UVW 1800. It makes it easier to select the Good stuff, and it gives you a fall back should the tapes go away, or you have to recapture

If you do a capture Now with Deck control, you can grab the shots AS you bump it up!

Of course if you dont have a Pro VTR with a TBC, then you need to get one, and since you are coming off a consumer machine, all you need is a frame synchronizer, not a full tbc.

I think there is an issue with playing certain flavors of Canon HDV on a Sony HDV deck (can you say proprietary?).

Specifically 24 frame, but may apply to other frame rates as well.

Search this forum for “Canon HDV” or simply Canon to see more on this

    Cool

yeah, once a cut was locked, they went out of house to mix, color, and finish, so the portable drives worked for them

I would love to get a san here, but the ony way i could sell it is if we set it up for the whole company of designers, photographers, interactive programmers.

    oh well, its to dream!

    thanx again
