If you mean m2t /hdv you should not lose much if at all, i can’t tell the difference , if edited in PP and using Adobe Media Encoder transcode intermediate codec does it automatically if you have set quality at HIGH before you edit by ticking Triangle cue left corner of Monitor as Cineform avi @ 1440x1080i ?ie., Project settings but, not after you try to Export project ?

1000 + Stills taken on a Canon 5D mark II of Tibet and China as back up to High definition Video from same camera for promo .Camera set at sRAW2 2784 x 1856 pixels. >

Converted to High quality JPEG in Canon Professional Digital > open files in Photoshop reduce size oi 1800 pixels in width to fit safety frame in PP monitor >Using Process Multiple Files > by doing this you wil be full frame & not cut ends of the images off , unless that is what you prefer.

Open files by Import into PP Automate to Sequence >set at 100frames. dissolve transitions set to 30 frames overlap, 1000 is done in say 30seconds, edit as required> add background audio etc.

Render timeline > EXport to Tape as Cineform HD avi, tick box to generate m2t/HDV file which could be used later as burn to Blu-Ray. The results are HD and stunning. Remember anything altered in Photoshop or Premiere will alter in other program .

The preset in PAL @25fps is Editing Mode is HDV playback>HD Anamorphic 1080i Ratio 1.333> upper field First>25fps timecode 48,000Hz Audio Samples.Frame Size 16:9 > OK

It will transcode., you must save m2t file after box opens at successfull render otherwis you will need to do it all over again if you are exporting to Tape. PP should automatically activate the receiving VTR Camcorder.

So many very good cameras and videocmacorders out there you cannot go very wrong. however, make sure the codec out of the camera suits your editing software. In the last three years for high definition we used and still are without problems a Panasonic 3CCD SD but, the Canon is marginally better, well a lot really. Canon HV20/30 now 40 Tape based and a real stunner with a 1920 x 1080P CMOS chip and a read speed of 25Mbps (professional standard) and a Canon 5D mark II which records at 38+Mbps H.264 MOV files which needs say CS5 Premiere Pro to work smoothly with a computer set up to Adobe specifications probably using a Nvidia Quadro FX4800 Card for FCP , but, we run a i7 Quad Core Workstation

We are in PAL world the 5D mark II can run at thspeeds you mention, but, after experimenting 25fps Broadcast in Australia suits us fine, you could use 24fps movie speed and they shot the last episode of House tv on this instead of the 35mm movie cameras, see Canon Web Site for details under professional video. Or the short film shot with the Canon 5 D mark II “Reverie” a real eye opener?
This has a CMOS in full frame 35mm which is ten times approx size of sensors in most camcorders and great Image Stabilized Lens.

AH, well try it obviously in the 5D mark II, may work. If it is a Sandisk https://www.sandisk.com they provide a Rescue Service disk or check on line ? Or use a Card reader which is a recommendation from Sandisk. I would not stuff around and re-shoot if you can. We always use a Canon HV 20/30/40 for back up on important material.

I agree with Michael, we use Sandisk UDMA 45Mbs -60Mbs Extreme IV mainly for High Definiton Video as the 5D mark II runs at 38+ MBps, the slower Ultra Cards work but are slow writing. Not worthwhile taking the risk with rubbish.

Try Premiere Pro CS5, but, You can shoot MOV (Video H.264) @640 x 480 (SD) from the 5D Mark II ,but, what a waste of quality from this camera ?

No, hardly ever use web, but, If you downsize images say from 5616 x 3744 pixels to say 1920 x 1080 high definition format using Photoshop( multi processing you end up with images that will fit virtually exactly into the Premiere Pro timeline, add titles and background , voice over if you want/ it is braodcast quality in Cineform avi,or mpeg-2, HDV / m2t. No borders ,only if you want them in 16:9 Widescreen. D’not Export WMV? Never upscale pixelization may occurr.

We do say 1000+ sRAW2 approx 2784 x1856 from a Canon 5D mark II convert in Canon Professional>fine tune in Photoshop Import images to Project, automatically set transitions usually (dissolve)they are pin sharp) and presto they drop on the timeline, anyhow for what it is worth that is the way we work.And have done 100’s to Pro tape, BLu-ray etc , even downsized to SD DVD if you must, but some definition will be lost ….

The HV 20 which is specs same as 30 &40 is approved by Adobe , the techs don’t read their own manual, been using it since 2007. Movie maker mainly crashes with too many H.264 mov files if it works at all. Try Premiere Elements 4/8/ or 9, it will handle H.264 mov files in say 4GB clips, >render timeline> Export to Movie using Adobe Media Encoder; Microsoft avi>uncompressed>open HD avi file in Premiere Pro ie., the old version, as CS5 will handle it pronto> then do your editing> it is a breeze> then Export to Tape save the mt2 files (you must click the box to do this) and import to Premiere Elements > render and burn to Blu-ray if you wish, stunning HDV at 1440 x 1080i it will open as anamorphic 1920 x 1080 ( the Canon has a 1920 x 1080P Cmos chip) and easily shown on a Sony Bravia 46′ Full HD using HDMI cable .

We have done 100’s Pro tapes and 2 Blu-rays this way.Your computer need to be a Quad Core i7 64 bit even with the 32 bit old system +NVIDIA Quadro Fx 3800 video card……you could get away with a lesser card but, it will look like slow motion in monitor window on transcode , but, will play normally)
