I’m a bit conflicted, Josh, because it’s been fun reading your thread. But I agree that you should stop posting about it. It may not be in your best interest to discuss job negotiations in a real-name, wide-open forum.

The “real name” policy here is both good and bad. On the one hand, it keeps some people honest, but it also leads others to engage in self-promotion. See the “Oh, I’m SOOO busy” post. I believe each and every one of them.

Meanwhile – good luck to you Josh, and I hope to see your posts often, perhaps in other contexts. In fact you should post a ton so you bury this thread dep in the Google results.

I’m fairly committed to using the Source 4 Jr. Zoom, for ease of packing. The idea of simplifying the logo, i.e. removing some of the finer filigree work, is a great one. I’ve noticed the same thing, that the fine metal burns much more rapidly. My favorite abstract patterns are two that I cut myself, out of aluminum cake pans. Very durable too!

Have you successfully used glass gobos in a Source 4 Jr. Zoom?

Now I don’t want to bash the Germans. Where they put the link on the other site makes perfect sense, and I SHOULD have figured it out rather than assume that the information was missing just because it wasn’t indexed in their search engine. This is gross national stereotyping, but whenever I have a problem with German anything, it is usually because of some inadequacy on my part.

Anecdote: we visited a son who was working in Germany and then took him to Italy for a week. We had a great time, but our son experienced a bit of culture shock with Italy (strikes, delays, general disorder – charming and delightful to me of course). Our last stop was Florence, where we boarded an overnight German train, for the trip back to Stuttgart. When our son settled into our perfectly neat clean compartment, and the train took off at the precise instant it was scheduled, he looked at us and said, “I liked Italy. But it’ll be nice to be back in Germany.”

Hi Zak,

This is a different issue from the thread. You might want to do a search for this answer, perhaps in the Final Cut Pro Basics Forum – it can get complicated. fwiw, it’s not inside FCP, and can be done either manually (you have to know where to find the preferences), or with a dedicated little program. I use Preferences Manager.

Taiyo Yuden disks have worked very well for me.

I’m surprised that a dedicated machine gives more errors. I always burn on a computer, and make sure that nothing else is happening during the burn.

Of the many other variables, the encoding bitrate is one of the most significant. A high bitrate may be more difficult for some DVD players to handle. Even if your movie is ten minutes long, experiment with a bitrate for 150 minutes and see whether that helps.

Don’t know about Vegas, but it would be easy in After Effects. For an actual jagged lightning simulation, you could luma key a dark window (or do a quick matte) with another layer from an effects generator like BorisFX Lightning. Making it look believable is another matter. Good sound effect is just as important.

Now that I have started looking into this, I’ve become interested on my own account. I’ve googled storyboard software, but haven’t found the magical “cheap” and “good” solution yet.

1. You sound a little pissed-off. Get rid of that emotion before you do the sit-down.

2. The word is “definitely,” not “defiantly.” Unless that’s a Freudian slip (see #1 above).

3. You have already noticed that anything you write here is visible to anyone who can type your name into Google. Don’t assume that your bosses have read this thread, but don’t assume they haven’t.

It sounds as though you are preparing well for this project, and that you and your supervisor are on the same page, which is great. You are correct to look for a different definition of a job, and as it were, apply for THAT job instead of trying to get a raise for your current job.

Interesting thread, but I think we tend to look at this through the wrong end of the telescope. We’re discussing how EDITORS increasingly have to be able to do other things. I think the reality is that people doing OTHER THINGS are adding editing to their skill sets.

The tv reporters who edit their own segments are only the most obvious examples.

I just received my third request in three months to send old video assets to a client so that they could have one of their employees do some repurposing. These employees were not hired as editors, but as something more corporate, perhaps “communications specialists.”

Of course I can’t tell for sure, but I suspect that many of the people posting questions on the COW’s editing forums are making their living as something besides editing.
