TerraServer.com for $29.95 for a month is not terrible but not great due to the limited pixel dimensions and stuff they put on the screen. They also sell some higher pixel-count images at various charges under $100.

I’m hoping to use WorldWind for the globe-to-partial continent scale, then TerraServer for the closer stuff if I can get it to match at all.

What’s up with the extreme pixelation of WorldWind at building-level detail? Am I not looking in the right places or loading the wrong library? If anyone has found some good sharp low-altitude imagery for free on the NASA site or on WorldWind please share how you did it.

I think this is called “incidental use” in debates about “Fair Use.”

The consensus, as I see it, is that a lot of people think incidental use SHOULD be considered “fair,” but the law is unsettled — hence all the blurring.

And then you hear stories about product placement, when big consumer goods co’s pay to have their trademarks on screen.

You’ve hit a sore point with me. I know firsthand that a certain mouse-ridden film company which also specializes in overpriced amusement parks will threaten you with legal annihilation, if you plan to shoot an image with one of their trademarked “characters” anywhere in it, even on a sweatshirt. (memo to Mme Bovary, Huck Finn, etc. — I apologize for using the word “character” for this co’s plasticky creations)

I’ve also seen blur applied to posters on the wall. But at the same time I’ve also seen plenty of shows in which there was no blurring at all.

I would love to hear from some producer who has been involved in such matters. In particular, as some have suggested here, I’d like to know whether the problem is some actual violation of trademark, or an overly-developed fear of being maybe, some day, sued just because a trademarked item appears in the frame.

And, what’s the worst case if a co. attacks? I won’t know what the mousy company would have done because I just cut the shot. Their lawyers are staff; I’d have to hire my own.

I’m using a paid version. I checked Apple Preferences and found that Flip4Mac had my registration information.

This problem was quite pervasive — oddly, everywhere in the timeline that did NOT require rendering. Even though the timeline played perfectly from FCP on an NTSC monitor.

The footage was ProRes422.

This could be a FCP issue too. I noticed that one time yesterday, one small section of a timeline gave me “unrendered” video when it was actually rendered. I exited FCP, clicked on my refresh pref’s tool (FCP Attic), re-started FCP, and the problem disappeared.

Fortunately I have a Digital Rapids card in a PC, so I just gave up on Flip4Mac and used that. But I’d like to get Flip4Mac working and I appreciate the feedback.

re: demo version. I own the expensive version, but I just downloaded the latest Beta update. I hope the software is sophisticated enough to know that I bought it. How can I tell?

The resulting files show actual video sporadically, but only at places where the shot is in a fade-in or fade-out.

Hi Kenzo,

First, forget the illness and the medical bills. That’s your problem, nobody else’s. The fact that your “friend” exploited you when you were ill gives a good clue as to his character, but beyond that it’s irrelevant.

Second, evaluate whether you need this “friend.” If not, then you have another interesting dilemma: do you tell the final client of your involvement?

Because the client is unhappy with her current experience, and because you have been part of the “team,” you probably should tell her that you have supplied the tapes, and that any delay in getting the tapes to her was beyond your control.

You say you are working out of your home — is that going to be a problem for the client? If your producer/friend did supply some value, even if it was only his office, perhaps you could enlist another producer/friend to bid on it with you.

I’m curious about one thing: perhaps she knows that you supplied the tapes, and she’s just trying to cut out the middleman. Perhaps she is a “grinder” as well as your friend. In that case, it’s probably a good idea NOT to go into detail about how much your friend marked up your services — unless you want to keep working for too little money.

Tough call. I’d go for it though.

re: good shielded cable. What’s a good brand? Iogear? Monster? I always suspect with the latter that I’m paying for marketing.
