Am I missing something?

March 22, 2012 at 1:39 pm in reply to: Photoshop CS6 Beta released, with magnetic timeline! The rumor mill did put out news of a return to Nvidia, but more lately towards integrated Intel graphics, at least in the MBP. (There has been complete silence on a MacPro. I don’t know what that means, but if no one is working on it, there is no one to leak info.) Anyway, if Mountain Lion will include external GPU support via Thunderbolt, we can attach whatever we want, upgrade at will, and that would be great!
Now, if Mountian Lion STILL won’t support it, well…. HP for all?

You think you’re bummed… I’ve got a bit of break this month, so after the last little bit is cleaned up, all new projects will begin in CS 5.5.

I got the same thing from the constant ‘post-pc’ thing. Have they fallen into their old trap? Remember the day when people said you couldn’t do ‘real work’ on a Mac? Guess what… you can’t do real work on an iPad! I’ve tried!
As far as the naming goes, there’s one of two things going on. The first may have to do with iPad’s classification as a computer, not a portable device of some kind. I’m not using a MacBook Pro 7, or an iMac 8, or a Mac Pro 5. So they’re dumping the numbering because now it’s a computer. Numbers and names are for Gameboys, and Playstations, and cel phones. (The Mac Pros use to have letters AND numbers(!), but they got rid of that.)
The second possibility is that they want to dump the numbering for the iPad and iPhone to better match the iPod, which also doesn’t have numbering. The technological advances from one model to the next, as we’ve seen, are getting more and more slight. There maybe something cool in there, but it takes a lot to blow our hair back.
But yeah, all the ‘post-pc’ talk is disconcerting.

Uh… HELLO! I already said that. Sheesh.

Complaining about analogies in this forum is no different than cooking eggs benedict in China. I mean, really. Get over yourself.

For me, X became nice and breezy when I turned off the organizing, transcoding, and analyzing on import and the background rendering. It was real useable after that! Lost some of the selling points, but oh well. Just my two cents.

Tim,
I’ve been doing local episodic television in segmented talk show format (half-hour) with FCPX for several months. I actually consider these small projects because they are low maintenance. There’s not a lot of demand on the color, so long as it’s balanced correctly and isn’t too hot or cold. Lighting is simple and standard. The audio is run through the Logic compressor to level it out, easy-peasy. Basic lower third IDs. This isn’t Emmy winning stuff I’m doing here. So even an hour long one of these I would still consider a small project.
However… I’m thinking of putting together some local Emmy contending episodes in documentary format, and also breaking out to try my hand at short movies. These would fall under big projects because I will be using more tools to create more storytelling. More color grading. More audio (backing tracks or sound fx). More complex titling. VFX, maybe (might do some sic-fi-ish shorts). The shorts may only be 7 minutes, but they’ll require more stuff, and I’d call it a ‘big’ project. For that I’ll move over to Adobe’s suite for the goodies.
So in my case, when I say big and small projects, it’s less about the length of the finished project as it is about how much effort I’m going to put into whatever I do create. Even a dynamo :30 spot could be a big project.
Hope that helps! And good question.
Keep on,

Bret: I have. The upgrade that’s up there right now is $399, but since they’re running such a big discount I wasn’t sure if the upgrade was also marked down. I don’t venture there often enough to know their usual pricing.
Oliver: You’re right, it may not be a matter of switching as much as having more robust options when I need them. The quick jobs will likely stay on FCPX, while the more complete ones may need to be done elsewhere. That’s one thing they got completely wrong if you ask me. The idea of First Cut was a really good one, and may be what X becomes for a lot of people. They could still bring it up to par, but we’ll see.

I’ve been reading around and it seems Adobe has acquired and will be adding SpeedGrade to CS6, at which point the answer to my question will be obvious.
FCPX is getting left in the dust, it seems.
