Andy, you snuck in while I was replying, but you sort of answered my question. They’re not pushing it all the way, but dang. I don’t expect to be filming 4K in the near future, but even so. What else do you think they can throw at it to get a really good test?
And someone mentioned 3D on another thread, and how they really wanted 24 cores. Aren’t they doing a workshop with Pixar tomorrow? If Sully’s hair isn’t taxing enough, I don’t know what is.

Then how was this guy running RED 4K video at full resolution, without hardware assistance on the mercury playback engine, coloring it, recording a screencast, and a webcast, on a MacBook Air, at the same time? What else can you throw at it?
So are we just talking about raw data transfer? The read/write speeds of the fastest drives are below the transfer rates of TB 1, aren’t they? What am I missing?
Forgetting for a moment the specs, what about as a tool to do a job? Does it not do it? And if it worked in this case, what does it take to demonstrate the shortcomings?

Comparing this to what has been offered for years in the old chassis, I don’t see how this is a ‘fail’. We don’t know for sure about the GPUs. It doesn’t LOOK like they are interchangeable, but they are accessible front and center under the hood, which might mean something. (Maybe a special version just for this casing? Can’t tell.)
As far as everything else goes, no extra card slots and drive bays, and for that it stinks?
I liked some of FCP X, disliked a little more of it. That move is paying off with the giant deal in Creative Cloud. (I’m still trying to figure out the problem there. I’ll have to go ask them.)
I sympathize with a lot of the complaints, but I like more of what I’ve heard than what I dislike, so I’m looking forward to the release and will most likely get it.
And you can move this thing! I seen a lot of beat up Mac Pros in my day and those guys will be THRILLED.

I have to agree with Herb. There’s nothing special about NBCs T&A clip. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. I loved it!! (I had to explain on FB to a few friends that elite athletes are extremely attractive. Elite athletes in slow motion is a gift from God.) But… I think any of us could have put together a much better montage, regardless of how you define ‘better’.
The BBC clips are good. I’m more impressed with Michael Johnson’s VO than anything, though. Very well done.

Jonathan,
You’re in for a world of hurt, my friend. However many full and dress rehearsals they run of the play, record them all. And, assuming they are running this for more than one show, start at the first show and record them all until you get it right. You will need the practice and you’ll find out quickly the limitations of doing this with 5Ds, and how to compensate. Be humble.
(BTW, I don’t blame you for coming here, since people actually respond on this forum. Just don’t tell anyone.)
As far as DVD vs Blu-ray… Figure this out NOW! With the amount of money you’ll spend on Bluray equipment, etc., make sure it has to be high definition. Because if it doesn’t, save your money and rent a tape based camera to film this in that will have the longer record times. It will make the recording process about 100 times easier.
As far as delivering this, either on DVD or Blu-ray, remember FCPX cannot create typical disc menus. It’s extremely limited and, if you ask me, most unprofessional.
If you’re sticking with the 5D, get online and research your brains out on DSLR filmmaking. (Start with learningdslrvideo.com and go to the beginning of Dave’s posts. He also links to other resources.) Again, be humble. If you’re truly a beginner, you’ve got a LOT to learn about what that camera can do. You can easily mess things up if you’re not prepared.
Best of luck!

June 16, 2012 at 10:46 pm in reply to: How come Apple get a pass on the “Evil Empire” tag.I think right now they get a pass because they are given a pass. It’s all momentum, or maybe a feedback loop. Apple is the perpetual motion machine of positive imaging. It won’t last, but only because it never has.
And all companies don’t become evil. Some don’t survive long enough to get that far. The rest either go out of business altogether or lose their perch and lumber on in obscurity.Apple will not stay where they are.
As far as CEOs go, remember that the vast majority of them make far less than many of the actors or athletes you can name. I think the thing that gets stuck in people’s craw is that they are either very smart and educated or know very smart and educated people that don’t make nearly what they think they are worth. What they don’t realize is that this is how it should be. No one will pay you one red cent for what you know, no matter how valuable. You can only be paid for what you do. Very, very few people can do what CEOs do, especially the a big dogs like Tim Cook.

Full Fiber-optic Thunderbolt? Not just the cable, but the whole kit and kaboodle.
That’s asking a lot, though. Late 2013 would still be early for such a thing, but TB should at least be on PCI 3 by then.

Now they are all talking about an email from Tim Cook that Apple has verified, saying something is coming in 2013.
However… I’d bet the farm the Mac Pro as it is known is gone and that Craig (you there, man?) is going to be right (daggumit) about an iMac Pro or some other, smaller form machine.
So… What I might do (now that I’m cross platform in my software) is go to a windows station for the next 2-3 years to see what Apple comes up with. If their new solution is good enough, the timeline won’t be too short to go back. And if the new stuff is stupid, I’ve already made the transition and it’s no big deal by that point.
But man just contemplating that stinks!!
(Pulling pin…. 1…2…4-no! 3!!)
Since this is taking so long…. Are they going to stick with Intel or are they building their own chip?
(boom:)

June 12, 2012 at 9:00 pm in reply to: Apple Confirms New Mac Pros and iMacs in 2013-ForbesCan someone remember one time Apple has officially commented on a product that has not been formally announced or released? I can’t think of one.
Even if every word of the article is true, it could just as easily mean the Mac Pro, the iMac and the Mac Mini are all dead and brand new lines will be rolled out next year.
