  • How come Apple get a pass on the “Evil Empire” tag.

On odd thing I have noticed about perceptions of Apple is that some “progessives” relate to it differently than other corporations that make obscene profits.

What brought this to fore was that I was yacking at a friend who is pro-Apple but anti-corporation. When I bitched about some practices, her response was “well, Apple is the most successful corporation of all time.” Now this would be a reasonable response from a pro business sort, but not really from someone who constantly whines about the profits of big oil or Walmart. She would never say :”Gulf Oil must be doing something right, look at how much money they made.”

For a lot of folk I know, making untold billions is sure proof that a company is satanic with a board meetings regularly convened in the 9th circle of Hell. Yet, they give Apple a pass on it.

I wonder what it is about Apple that makes it immune to a huge chunk of the “I hate and don’t trust large corporation” crowd?

Somehow I missed that the first time around.

I bet a lot of those folks also shop at Whole Foods, despite the opinions of its CEO…

I don’t know, Man. There’s plenty of hating against Apple going on in this forum!

That said, anyone who “hates” corporations in general is silly. That’s like hating highways or airplanes. Each is unique and should be liked or not on its own merits.

I think the one thing that most people appreciate is that Apple has generally created some really wonderful products that people enjoy using. They look cool and work pretty damn well. And they are often groundbreaking.

That probably goes a long way towards excusing/ignoring some of the negative impacts that are part and parcel of being a large multinational corporation.

I used to work at a place that was situated above a Whole Foods. We used to call it “Whole Paycheck”.

Some say that you can take Apples famous “1984” commercial and substitute big brother’s image for Steve Jobs face and you will have a accurate picture of thee company it has morphed into.

Disclaimer I do not hate Apple nor its products just its corporate philosophy

Its so funny that Apple is the first one to be critized while Google openly is in bed with CIA/NSA.
Using Apple products is still a choice but Google is in your face everywhere.

All companies that become too big end up evil.
Its inevitable in a democratic capitalist system where everything is for sale.
