Yes you can use that machine as a windows server without the Unity software installed. good luck!

  • As long as it remains just cuts and dissolves you should be good to go. Typically, going backwards is not the best workflow however. Avid will support taking older projects/sequences/bins to newer products instead of the other way around.

I would not recommend it although I have not heard of any issues. As always in these situations, proceed with caution.

Sounds like that workflow works. I just do not know why you would log clips from Tape A, and capture media from those logged clips off of Tape B. Why not just log Tape B to begin with?

If you have multiple clients on Unity sharing the same Unity workspace, you must shut down all client workstations and reboot before the databases will rebuild. The databases will have to be rebuilt for all clients. Until this happens, media will appear offline.

You should be able to get support as long as the system meets the minimal requirements. Yes you can do the upgrade from one workstation to another.

PC is much more stable than the MAC and I think traditionally, Avid applications perform much better on a MAC. Updates are easier for Avid to do on a PC than MAC. There are much more users on PC than MAC as well.

PC’s seem to be much more flexible in the configurations. For example, what version of QT you can have etc.

Unity is probably your best bet. One major advantage to Unity, especially because you are an Avid house, is all your support goes through one company. Avid.

Terrablock from Facilis is stable but not as robust as Unity.

These guys are also very good from what I hear.
