I use laptops and they are fine, you can use firewire, USB2, some have 2 drives or some of the new ones come with a slot a SATA drive card can be plugged in, I was just going to update my laptop when Intel announced that they are coming out with new Dual Core processors( Core Duo 2) that have large speed increases over current dual cores for close to the same prices, so I’m going to wait a few weeks and see how the new pricing falls.

You have two problems 1. your system is slightly underpowered for HDV, 2. It appears you only have one harddrive, you need at least 2 Harddrives, one for the OS and Apps, the other for video related tasks to have proper throughput.

Things are going to be changing in the next week or so, Intel is releasing a new line of dual core processors “Core Duo 2” whch have much higer performance at about the same prices and drastically drop the prices on the older “Core Duos”, so there maybe better pricing on systems using the older processors and better cost/performance ratio on the newer models.

The RTX100 has alot of caveats as far as the system configuration goes and we don’t know what his system is, so I would not personally tell a person that sure install the card. -

Thats the catch, we don’t know what machine he’s tying to put it in, and like Harm says 2.0 doesn’t actually work the best with that card right now, having been through this type of scenario with another manuf waiting to get things fixed which never got resolved, I’ll take horsepower first.

OHCI is FireWire(iLink,IEEE1394), its a high speed serial that most camcorders have to use to connect to the computer, You didn’t give any particulars on your computer, in alot of cases the money spend on a card like the RTX could be spent on up grading the computer.

Its so much easier to have equipment to match the software you are using and not run high power software in a underpowered machine, not too far back I was using a dual drive PIII laptop doing on-line DV vice doing off-line like you are describing which can be time consuming, the catch was the software matched the capabilities of the machine.

Its basically called Off-Line editing, you generate a EDL(Edit Decision List) or AAF(Advanced Authoring Format) using low res files if you don’t have a computer capable of DV, the rub is you have to find a more powerful computer thats capable of doing Native DV to process the final files.
HDV captures at the same data rate as DV, but you need a reasonably powerful computer to edit natively, you can use plug-ins like Cineform which generate secondary files used for editing, but you still need a computer that will handle DV. -
