[Ignatius Gorin] “Any recommendation for RAM brand and video card model?”

I’ve been using OWC for RAM and other Mac bits for many years (& they also ship internationally). Their RAM meets Apple specs at a fraction of the price, and they’ve been a good company to deal with.

For a video card, do get the ATI HD4870 if you can (about UKP250 in the isles).

    Which codec did you use?

Uncompressed SD (typ. 720×486) will give you jerky motion on a system where the drives aren’t fast enough.

“601” is the color space for SD, nothing to do with whether you work only with the 480 lines of say DV footage or the full 486 lines of broadcast SD.

What do you mean by “looks worse?”

This kind of complimentary upgrade is designed to soothe those who paid a lot of money for a full or upgrade version just before a new generation, and to prevent resellers from having to destroy obsolete inventory.

This sort of deal is generally available from the time of announcement to a short time after the new version is actually shipping.

If you upgrade from CS3 to CS5, Adobe dings you with a substantial penalty for having cheated them out of their CS4 upgrade loot last year.

Look for resellers that still have CS4 in stock (look for an ad from Videoguys on this site, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you see in it), and buy and register the CS4 before July 12, then request a free upgrade from CS4 to CS5 from Adobe before July 27.

Do check these dates yourself, just in case of any changes!

I did the above last month, and got those dates at the time.

And the CS5 AE is a good step up from CS3…

525i = good ol’ NTSC video with all the extra lines that were needed in ye olden days.

Give him a DVCPRO50 NTSC render.

He should be able to ingest that, and the quality will be better than the horrible DV25.

July 2, 2010 at 10:10 pm in reply to: poor slow motion quality with prores 422 HQ

That is frame blending, the best FCP can do.

Do the slowdown in Motion instead, it can synthesize the missing frames (a 5x slowdown is certainly challenging, but it will look better than in FCP).

And use regular Prores instead of HQ. You won’t notice any quality difference here, but you won’t have to wait as long for the render.

June 29, 2010 at 5:01 pm in reply to: Dump your RED camera, iPhone 4 is here

    Great short, thanks!

What’s wrong with your iPhone 4?

Mine works great: everything is way faster, the Retina display is jawdroppingly sharp and pleasant, the cameras are very good, and I don’t feel a burning urge to hold the phone by the lower left corner (if I did, I’d get a barely noticeable Belkin Grip Vue wraparound case that fixes the problem).

Note that for the cameras (still and video) you point to whatever you want to be in focus and exposure-optimized. A rectangle blinks briefly to show the location, and you can actually see the focusing and exposure adjustment happening.

Very cool, now we just need an Ansel Adams Zone System app and a Macbeth auto-adjust app!

And I trust the first 4-slot matte boxes for the iPhone 4 are already out, together with nodal gear heads with a rubberized clip-on camera holder.

No need for double sound as there are already apps and accessories for hooking up your Sound Devices 552 or other mixer.

Follow-focus is already available via finger press on the screen, but a radio-controlled motorized finger could prevent any camera shake for those using cheap gear heads.

June 28, 2010 at 10:13 pm in reply to: Crappy Consumer Camcorder w Audio input???

How about $99.00 for a refurb Kodak Zi8 (or $129.00 for a new one)?

It has 1080p & 720p HD, an 1/8″ mic jack, and is closer to idiot proof than most other cameras.

Get a table tripod or other kind of mount, and you’re good to go.

You’ll need to keep it hooked up to power if you go beyond an hour, to be safe.

    David,

    A just-in-case question:

Do you have a 330V high quality high-Joule surge protector between the 110V mains and [the plasma monitor and all devices connected to it]?

I blew an expensive Panny pro deck when I used a 400V surge protector a long time ago.

It seems Panny’s gear is less tolerant of power line trouble than Sony.

(330V is the lowest useable voltage rating. This is needed to chop off transients at a safe level, and there are many sources of electrical problems…)
