  • FCP/Motion Into Media100 At 525i ?

(Sorry if this isn’t the right place of this post)

I’m working on motion graphics for someone who wants to import the graphics into Media100.

I’m using Motion (and Final Cut) and exporting the graphics for him to import into his Media100 system.

I’ve tried various codecs and compressions, but he says when he imports the QuickTime clips (which look great in QT) they appear distorted in his sequence.

All the variables as far as aspect ratio, NTSC, frame rate, using the highest compression, etc. seems to be in order.

Except, he says the Media100 has a default resolution of 525i, which he is working in.

    Honestly, I don’t understand what 525i means.

I see in Final Cut, I have the option of changing my sequence settings to MPEG 525… However, when I do that, a message appears saying I don’t have the correct hardware.

If someone could explain to me what 525i means and how to change the resolution of my Motion project and/or export to fit this criteria, or ay other advice, that would be extremely helpful.

    Thank you!

525i = good ol’ NTSC video with all the extra lines that were needed in ye olden days.

Give him a DVCPRO50 NTSC render.

He should be able to ingest that, and the quality will be better than the horrible DV25.

Even better download the Media 100 codecs and export as a quicktime conversion. Would be best to use an ‘easy setup’ like prores NTSC then use quicktime conversion.

This doesn’t seem to be working. In the Media100, it only gives the option of doing 525i and with that setting it says it’s NTSC 601 – which is just like 720×480 in Final Cut, correct? I’ve tried putting a 720×486 clip in, but it just looks worse. Any other ideas?

“601” is the color space for SD, nothing to do with whether you work only with the 480 lines of say DV footage or the full 486 lines of broadcast SD.

What do you mean by “looks worse?”

When a 720×480 clip is imported the edges of the objects and frame are extremely rough and pixcelated. But when a 720×486 clip is imported, it plays back in a jerky motion with the rough edges.

    Which codec did you use?

Uncompressed SD (typ. 720×486) will give you jerky motion on a system where the drives aren’t fast enough.
