HAH! Thanx for that info. In another BMD source, they show an Envy15 as acceptable. Sounds to me like they released a product before the SDK was fully understood…so so typically bad judgment,

Thanx for replying, Gary. Yes, i would agree about the default values. However, my point is, that you CAN force 10-bit if you need it. I do this a lot with 10-bit Cineform Intermediates.
In fact, Media Composer is one of the few NLE’s that currently allow a 10-bit workflow. I beleive Edius v6 can do this , as well. -

Could you please explain more about your statement that “(AMA defaults to 8bit DNX even from higher bit depth source}”. My experience and understanding is that AMA is handled in its native form. When importing an AMA, or doing at video mixdown, you are presented with the option of choosing the DNxHD bitrate aand bitdepth.

hmmmm…I don’t know of any cams that record at 60 fps progressive. So, assuming you recorded at 60fps Interlaced, what frame rate are you using to import into AMC?

If you use the Media Tool, or even more effective is the Avid Media Database Viewer(a freeware 3rd party program), they will identify by name all the media files associated with each project, by project name. The media Database Viewer will also allow you to select database files and move or copy them to another drive.

Another solution is to transcode the 7D files to cineform before you import them into MC. The advantage to doing this is that cineform will properly resize the image format for a more conventional frame size, as well as make the files playable in real time.

To elaborate on Jobs response, the nature of an AMA link is to provide instant access to the natively stored files, on the acquisition media. There is no access to these files once the removeable, acquisition media is disconnected from your computer. In order to copy the native media to a non-removeable storage location on your computer, it is necessary to consolidate the files. This will COPY the acquired files to a location of your choice.
There are limitations to AMA linked files, once linked within MC. One cannot add FX, nor output any AMA linked file via QT Reference. In order to do this, the TRANSCODE process must be done. Transcoding will reformat the natively formatted files to DNxHD, AND copy them to your media storage file location.
So, if you’ve consolidated these files, then transcoded them, you have, on your computer, a copy of the original files as well as a converted copy.

My understanding is that “no”, you cannot capture from the MXO2 Mini, via the Avid capture utility. As far as MC5 is concerned, the MXO2 Mini is for color-accurate display only. That isn’t to say, however, that you cannot capture from the Mini. It has a standalone capture application, that will transcode to Matrox codec choices for SD, HD and M-JPEG. These formats can then be imported into MC.

Technically, you’re correct. However, I would argue that the MXO2 Mini will capture as a standalone box; and, if it will output an HDMI signal, this signal can be recorded as “output”. Of course, the accuracy of recording this signal is dependent on the “real time” capability of the timeline playback.

Avid MC 5, soon to be released, has announced support for the matrox MXO2 Mini box. It will do hd and SD.
