Have not work with avid in a very long time. What is the deal with the workflow with the 7D? Most of the time I convert the 7D h264 to pro res 422 or hq (depending) via mpeg streamclip.

Though from reading 7D h264 files can just be dropped into avid and work well with the system with no transcoding needed. Is that the best workflow? I also read about transcoding to DXnHD but to get to that file you need to transcode the file within avid? is there a program like mpeg that does that?

You can use any QT encoder if you like, but it won’t be as nice.

MC5 allows you to access the files directly through AMA. It means just opening the folder and playing the footage. However, to play it back in RT requires a really heavy machine. Also, it’s just too much a strain on any system for plain editing, so it seems, so most folks prefer to open the footage through AMA, then transcode to DNxHD. Transcoding AMA-H264 files to DNxHD in Avid is slightly faster than realtime. Much faster than a traditional import. Finally, this method takes care of proper conversion from H264 with linear gamma to Rec 709 video.

You can also do a traditional file->import in Avid, but that is slower and does not perform the gamma correction.

Another solution is to transcode the 7D files to cineform before you import them into MC. The advantage to doing this is that cineform will properly resize the image format for a more conventional frame size, as well as make the files playable in real time.

I have a video tutorial that shows my workflow for files from the Canon EOS 550D/EOS Kiss x4/EOS Rebel T2i

    It may help.
