Are there other I/O devices besides the Mojo that will allow me to import analog material into my AVID MC 4 (PC based) with a good level of quality?

I’ve recently purchased MC 4 w/o a Mojo (budget issues) and have used firewire to import DV material… still struggling with a Betacam SP issue (firewire too) that isn’t working… mentioned that in an earlier post.

I like not to spend money on a Mojo now, as most of my work is DV or Betacam SP/Digital and XDCAM (imported) and a firewire suffices.

YET viewing on a monitor would be great as well as importing other sources on the “as needed” basis. IF there is a machine out there that is cheaper than the AVID mojos, I’d be interested.

Nope. The minimum you could go with would be the original Mojo, which just does SD via Composite, Component, or S-Video, and two channels of unbalanced audio. You can find them on ebay for about $400 – $600, maybe even cheaper. Your step up from there is MojoSDI.

    Here’s a Mojo for $400:

If you need HD capturing (not file import, but from tape via SDI) then you need the MojoDX, but it doesn’t have analogue inputs so you’d need Component to SDI converters for analogue.

    Thank you Michael.

I sort of figured that might be the case.

I do know of other I/O boxes, or video cards people have told me about that might work… but no doubt not as good as the AVID dedicated Mojo system.

It will most likely be that I’ll buy a used Mojo… simply can’t afford the SDI or DX they sell.

Avid MC 5, soon to be released, has announced support for the matrox MXO2 Mini box. It will do hd and SD.

Please be careful about the language here – the MXO2 Mini is supported for monitoring ONLY on MC5. No “I”, no “O”.

Technically, you’re correct. However, I would argue that the MXO2 Mini will capture as a standalone box; and, if it will output an HDMI signal, this signal can be recorded as “output”. Of course, the accuracy of recording this signal is dependent on the “real time” capability of the timeline playback.

To continue this Matrox MXO2 Mini option… can it be used to digitize material as a “non-controllable” deck option in the AVID “Capture” Mode?

I mean for the $400-$500 I’d have to spend for an older version Mojo, would this Matrox option help me out? I understand it isn’t as compatible or as “friendly” as a Mojo, but as an independent I/O breakout box, wouldn’t the AVID import my Component ( or other analog) material?

My understanding is that “no”, you cannot capture from the MXO2 Mini, via the Avid capture utility. As far as MC5 is concerned, the MXO2 Mini is for color-accurate display only. That isn’t to say, however, that you cannot capture from the Mini. It has a standalone capture application, that will transcode to Matrox codec choices for SD, HD and M-JPEG. These formats can then be imported into MC.

    Bill:

Thanks for your reply and information.

So, if I got you right, I can digitize analog material via the Matrox Mini, but it will be to my computer hard drive, with a Matrox codec, outside the Avid program.

I can then import the media file into the Avid (MC4)for editing… Is this done w/o the need to transcode or alter the file?
