Ripple Training just released a free FCP plugin called “RT Blend Modes.” It lets you “test drive” different built-in blend modes when you composite one picture over another, to see what the result would be before you actually apply a blend mode. Check it out here:

What method are you using to sync the angles (cameras) when you create the multicam clip? If you have audio on all 5 cameras, including the X-ray camera, try creating a multicam clip by synchronizing using audio. FCP is usually very good at doing this, and you may be surprised that camera 5 sync’d with the other 4, leaving gaps where you had to stop that camera.

    Hi, Mark,

First, I suggest that you make a Snapshot of your project. In the Browser, right-click the project and select “Snapshot Project.” NOTE: Do NOT choose “Duplicate Project…” because any changes you make to either the original or the duplicate will also occur in the other. The snapshot gives you an independent copy of the project for “safe keeping.”

Then, in the original project’s timeline double-click the multicam clip to open it in the Angle Viewer. Any changes that you make to angle clips in the Angle Viewer occur in the multicam clip.

If I’m not mistaken, the orange LaCie drives spin at 5,400 RPM. “Desktop” drives such as the LaCie d2 Quadra spin at 7,200 RPM. That could account for what you (don’t) hear when you press “L”.

On my 2017 iMac, with media on an external USB 3.0 hard drive, double-speed audio is not muted, but usually if I hit “L” a second time to speed playback even more then the audio is muted.

Perhaps your muting is related to the speed of your processor and/or the speed of the drive(s) on which your media is located. You can’t do much about the processor speed, but if your computer has a Thunderbolt-3 port you might consider buying an external SSD drive. If I’m editing a multicam project I sometimes copy the media to an SSD drive and import it to FCP from there.

How about setting an In point in each clip, then creating your multicam clip? FCP won’t include anything prior to the In points of the clips.

If you import your media into the Final Cut library, then copy that library to another drive, you will not need to relink anything because everything is contained within the library file.

If you leave the media in place outside of the library, then your library will contain a link to each media file that you imported. If you copy only the library, and the media remains in its original location, the pointers in the backup library will still point to the original media. However, if you’ve also copied the media and want the backup library to point to the backup media you will need to relink each media file to point to the backup media.

  • @Jeremy,

I’m glad this worked for @Mau. However, when I select a clip on my primary storyline and press Command+g, FCPX “beeps” at me and does nothing. What might I be doing wrong?

I did find that if I select that clip and the one after it and then press Control+Shift+S (Detach Audio) I can then delete the audio portion of the first clip and the subsequent audio will slide to the left, closing the audio gap. The video of both clips remains as it originally was.

    Thanks!

  • It may be that more people are not reporting this issue because they use Zoom’s own recording feature. (This may require a paid Zoom Pro account at 15USD/month.)

In my experience Zoom records MP4 at 25fps with audio at 32kHz. I have edited many Zoom recordings in FCPX without a problem, though I’ve found that for some meeting participants Zoom does not do a good job of synchronizing video and audio.

Sync is usually perfect, but I have found it sometimes to be as much as 6-8 frames out of sync. In these cases I separate the audio and video tracks in my timeline and move the audio to be in sync with the video. If I am hosting and recording the meeting, before the interview I have each participant (one-by-one) do a hand clap to simplify synchronizing in FCPX.

Do a search in your browser for “fcpx <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;”>error -41562″ and you will find several posts. This error seems to mean that FCPX was not able to write on the specified output drive because (1) there is insufficient available space on that drive, or (2) the drive is not formatted properly. There may be other reasons as well.
