Mute sound on double sped
Posted by Guy Crossman on March 2, 2021 at 3:02 pmStill getting used to FCPX. If I hit “L” to double speed playback, the sound mutes -sometimes, not always! Sure I’m doing something wrong, but don’t know what. Any help gladly taken, Thanks, Guy

March 2, 2021 at 4:16 pmOn my 2017 iMac, with media on an external USB 3.0 hard drive, double-speed audio is not muted, but usually if I hit “L” a second time to speed playback even more then the audio is muted.
Perhaps your muting is related to the speed of your processor and/or the speed of the drive(s) on which your media is located. You can’t do much about the processor speed, but if your computer has a Thunderbolt-3 port you might consider buying an external SSD drive. If I’m editing a multicam project I sometimes copy the media to an SSD drive and import it to FCP from there.

March 2, 2021 at 4:20 pmThanks Bill, suspected it might be an inadequate drive problem. I’m using one of those orange Lacie rugged drives. Handy it’s rugged actually because the postman drops them through the mailbox, so they start with a 3 foot fall to a hard surface! Thanks again I’ll check it out, Best Guy

March 2, 2021 at 10:21 pmIf I’m not mistaken, the orange LaCie drives spin at 5,400 RPM. “Desktop” drives such as the LaCie d2 Quadra spin at 7,200 RPM. That could account for what you (don’t) hear when you press “L”.
