October 9, 2010 at 4:51 pm in reply to: RT Playback Issue

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for your responses,

I’m away from the office at the moment and will check the drive read write speeds. The raid is a PROMAX esata 8tb raid with 8 drives configured to raid 0, I’m pretty sure they’re 7500 rpm. Before starting this project, I re-formatted the the raid and all the project media including the quicktime clip are stored on this raid.

One detail that could be important? I have the project file stored on a Drobo raid that is connected to the system via FW800. I’ve never done this before, but wanted to make sure to have the file backed up in case of a drive failure. Could this be causing the playback issue?

    Thanks!

    Rich,

The show is one hour …. to help with playback I closed all sequences and created one quicktime file with the hope it would playback without issue. Still not working. The project file is 36mb …. there are a few photos, but it seems to be choking ar random locations. All the media is stored on a freshly cleaned raid.

    Vince,

Thanks for your input, I will definitely be changing over to a S-Corp asap for the reasons you mentioned.

Received some additional feedback from CBS this morning telling me that the reason they have to pay this way is because of a IRS law stating that they can’t “rent” equipment from employees without including the “rental” as additional income/wages. Once I change over to a s-corp, I can bill for the gear separately since the equipment is owned by the corp and not the employee.

Thanks for all your thoughts and comments!

Another problem with this policy is that, the employer (CBS) is telling me (The Employee) that as part of my “job Description” I need to invest in and bring to work over $250,000 in equipment. I have to pay for it, maintain it and write off the salvage value when it’s out dated in a few years. How do I depreciate the gear when all my income from the equipment is being payed to (The Employee) and not my business? Last I checked there’s no way to “Depreciate” equipment on your standard income tax form. I can’t show the income from the gear on my Schedule C because then I’ll be double taxed. My “Gear Rental Income” has already paid out Federal, State, Social Security, Etc…. via W2 deductions.

Every other network and production company I work with either:
    1. Pays the invoice price for gear and crew and reports the income paid to my company via 1099s.

    2. Payrolls the crew for all the reasons mentioned above by others (Workman’s comp, liability, etc) and pays the gear as rental (even from a sole proprietor or LLC) and reports that payment to the IRS via a 1099.

Bottom line: CBS is making their own rules….. If you want to work for them, this is the way it’s done at CBS.

September 15, 2010 at 5:17 pm in reply to: Audio Issues – FCP Log and Capture XDCAM EX Files

    Ian,

Thanks for your reply ……. these clips come from a PMW-350. The Sony XDCAM cam EX Browser plays the clips just fine………. I don’t have any additional XDCAM components installed, but all the software is up to date.

Were you able to solve your issue with the PMW-350 clips in Premiere?

    Thanks!

    Shane,

Thanks for your responses! Since I can’t hear audio during playback, I’ve been importing “all” the clips that have important audio … ie. interviews, dialogue and nat sound … once imported into the project, I then look for in/outs etc… It would be nice to use L+T to screen some of those clips prior to import. I’m curious why the audio would be running 2X as fast as the video playback.

I’ll try the Sony app and see how that works. It wouldn’t work on the Mac Book Pro, so I never thought to try it on my edit system.

    Thanks again for your suggestions!

February 23, 2010 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Problem Loading SXS Driver: Macbook Pro

    Olof and Tom,

Thanks for your replies and offers to help! I did run Disk Warrior and a ton of other things and the problem continued….. until last night when I stumbled across a fix. I tried to install the drivers and clip viewer on my G5 and had no problem. I did notice that after the DMG launched the image in finder was a illustration of a box, while the image on my laptop was a blank looking document. I captured the images to share with you guys and low and behold when I placed the blank image on my desktop, it changed into the illustrated package and worked like a charm! Not sure what was going on there?

Thanks for your help! I still have a couple of kinks to work out to get it to work with and without FCP, hopefully not another post!

    Thanks again.
