FCP-Log and Transfer-Audio Issues-XDCAM EX Footage
Posted by Bill Paris on September 14, 2010 at 10:17 pmIm running FCP on a duel quad intel Mac G5 with a Kona 3 Card … shooting with Sony PMW350 XDCAM EX at 1920X1080 29.97 with FCP set to capture at 1920X1080 29.97 Pro Res HQ.
The problem I’m having is playback of clips in log and transfer mode…. the audio starts out very fast for about 3 seconds and then cuts out. The same thing happens on my Mac Book Pro running FCP. Once the clips are captured and imported into FCP they run fine…… any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

September 14, 2010 at 10:33 pmYes. The G5 isn’t suited for conversion of footage to ProRes. For that you need a computer with an Intel processor. That’s why your MacBook Pro works…it has the Intel chip.
The G5 is outdated for dealing with the new camera formats, and the ProRes codec.

September 14, 2010 at 11:36 pmOK…gotcha. So the only issue is that they don’t playback in the L&T viewer, but they import fine? Do you only import certain cuts?
Skip FCP and use the Sony XDCAM Transfer software. It has a Viewer too. Most people use that because it is more stable. Both L&T and the Transfer software bring in the footage native format only.

September 15, 2010 at 12:02 amok- I think I have finally finished reading every forum, log, blog etc. and I have to say- I think I am in “virtual love” with Shane Ross.
I am a poor excuse for a Television Production teacher at a tiny little high school in South Carolina. So far, I have gotten by on wit and charm- but we recently upgraded to FCP7 and I’m thinking my days are numbered. I have Panasonic DVX’s that run on the minidv tapes (we will soon go tapeless-not topless- tapeless) and I have 83 sweet, well-meaning students marching through my classroom every day.
We are not real big on time codes and it’s wreaking havoc on the import process. Also, the firewire uploads are bombing out for no reason. I’d like to say I can even spout what processor, camera settings, playback settings HDblah blah blah to make myself sound smart but I’m throwing in the towel and admitting I’m a neophyte. I want my LiveType back- I stink at motion.. every time I think I have it down one of the kids touches something in a template and it takes me 2 hours to “undo” what they just did… do I need to just be put out to pasture?

September 15, 2010 at 12:16 amMan, I don’t want to picture what it is like teaching students this business with all the format options. We made enough mistakes with the limited formats we had at hand. And as a professor, keeping up with all of this ALONE is a full time job. You just have to read forums, and see what advice we offer and what workflows are explained here, there, and everywhere. Go to Lynda.com and watch those tutorials.
And try to teach the GOOD habits before the BAD ones happen.

September 15, 2010 at 1:37 amShane,
Thanks for your responses! Since I can’t hear audio during playback, I’ve been importing “all” the clips that have important audio … ie. interviews, dialogue and nat sound … once imported into the project, I then look for in/outs etc… It would be nice to use L+T to screen some of those clips prior to import. I’m curious why the audio would be running 2X as fast as the video playback.
I’ll try the Sony app and see how that works. It wouldn’t work on the Mac Book Pro, so I never thought to try it on my edit system.
Thanks again for your suggestions!

September 29, 2010 at 11:00 pmHello Shane and Bill
I experienced the exact same problem with Log & Transfer and XDCAM EX footage. In the L&T viewer, audio plays superfast for a few seconds then cuts out. Audio plays fine for the clips in Final Cut, after I import them.
I switched to XDCAM transfer and that problem went away…though I have a new one. I’d like for my clips to end up in the designated Logging Bin, but no matter what they end up in the root directory of my project. This happen to you?
thanks

November 11, 2012 at 4:15 amI stumbled upon this thread after I bought a PMW-200 and decided to update my old copy of XDCam for Log and Transfer. I then had the same problem with all the audio playing chipmunk style at the beginning of the clip, which then finished playing silently.
It occurred to me that I should close and re-open Final Cut 7 so the new plug-in could be detected by the program. Worked.
