Downloading them now. When I ran Software Update, the only thing that came up was the Pro Apps update. After I downloaded that and it installed, it ran Update again by itself and the FCS updates appeared. Has it always worked like this? I can’t remember.

Ya, I would definitely try to grab some b-roll if you can. Perhaps the company has a corporate video they can giving you showing the building(s) everyone works in, interior and exterior shots, and you can capture that. If they don’t have one, maybe you can arrange a quick shoot to gather the shots you need. In fact, that may be better because now that you have the interviews and know what the BOD is talking about, you could tailor your shoot around their topics of conversation.

Thanks so much. Those are awesome!!

The above instructions by Greg Nosaty are correct, but you may need to do one more thing. After your select your timeline in the browser (step 1 above), right click and select “Make Sequence Clips Independent”, then proceed to the next step of right clicking again and select Media Manager. After that, proceed to the next step of “set Media Manager to “Create offline” from the drop down menu.” in the post above.

I’d do it all in After Effects. Otherwise you’re rendering everything out in Final Cut, then doing work in AE and rendering it out again. There are more (and better) keying options in AE. You can put your motion backgrounds on another layer and make sure all is keyed out when you turn that layer off/on. The simple choker and matte choker can really be your friend here, as well as Keylight for the keying.
Also, you will probably get better keys if you convert the footage to DVCPRO HD before you bring the footage into After Effects. Uncompressed HD would give you an even better key, but you’d need over a terabyte of free space for your 3 hours of footage, plus at least the same amount for your render files. That being the case, DVCPRO HD will do a pretty good job. Good luck.

I’ve noticed the same thing too regarding the quality. It looks to me like it’s coming out upper field first, rather than being converted to lower field first for DV. I know there’s a solution to this because HDV works fine in Motion 3 going to the monitor. The other thing that makes it bad (and Motion has the same problem going out) is that the pixel aspect ratio isn’t correct. Everything is slightly vertically squished. Not a lot, but noticeable if you’re familiar with the footage. I hope they get these issues corrected soon.

I do that as well. The project is always left open, so it’s easily accessable.

Ya it’s the FXPack that causes trouble with Motion crashing, smoothcam, and all the associated FXPlugs. The good news is that they released a new update a few days ago that solves all the problems. I downloaded it and everything works great now.

You might want to try a filter called dvmatte. It does a pretty good job helping you key DV footage. It’s been a while since I used it so I kind of forget how much it improves your keying. You can try out a fully functioning demo of it at dvgarage.com.
