Yeah, your assessment of the quality that you can expect from Handbrake is right on.
The quality hit taken by ripping media off DVD into a timeline is not ideal. When I can, I like to dub DVDs to tape. A few months ago, I was working on a doc where a lot of the footage was submitted by amateurs. Much of it was on DVD, and many of those DVDs didn’t play in a set-top. Handbrake was the difference between having the shot and not having it – that’s why I have fond memories of it.

Also, was the QT that you watched on your desktop compressed with the DV codec? That adds compression to your text that can make it blocky.
But its very true that you need an external monitor to see what you need to see.

Anywhoo, I reckon the disparate settings are not the 32bit floating point vs. 16bit integer (Final Cut exclusively uses 32 bit for sequences, you can’t change it. the manual explains why).
You can change the audio settings under “General” tab in “Sequence Settings”, but this probably won’t solve your problem.
Is it possible that your DV source audio was recorded at 32Khz? Are you using the DV Easy setup?
