Why not a reference movie? He’s talking _Compressor_ not _Combustion_.
Reference quicktimes (created when “create self-contained” is de-selected) merely point to the footage and renders that already exist, rather than a self contained file, which contains each frame of your timeline in a, um, self-contained fashion.
Reference movies are faster to encode, and take up much less space, which is the perfect thing for an intermediate file that’s headed to compressor.
However, I’ve run into some trouble lately with text aspect scaling when moving from a ProRes 1080i to a DVCPRO HD 1080i format via the reference. So, it would be wise to test it before you add this step to your workflow.
