That’s the thing about “history” — it is , by definition, what used to be.
I’ve handled plenty of query’s from folks like these who own the hardware they prefer (which is often Macs) and have absolutely no problem using their computers to create and share video content for all sorts of reasons.
It’s almost as if, like word processing and spreadsheets before it, video creation is becoming a kinda normal mode of communication for all sorts of people.
Imagine that.

But looked at another way, that could be just an additional 10,000 business users in each of the 20 largest countries around the world per month. It’s not like video literacy isn’t spreading fast globally – and lots of people are using it for all manner of personal, technical, and commercial communications needs.
Video production capable computers are the default now. From every manufacturer.
And as much as it might annoy Bob to see this capability flow from the technological broadcast priesthood to the masses – that’s already kinda what’s happened.
The data scientist preparing presentations that need video support, the marketing consultant, the architect and the interior designer can ALL leverage business results using video. (And unlike broadcast pros, the big bonus is that they aren’t near as likely to bitch for a solid decade about losing 1960s style OMF support!)
We’ll see what Apple says at the Creative Summit.

Interesting for a number of reasons.
I remember how surprised I was when I first started using Frame.io for client collaboration – and needed to then post the results of that collaboration to my Vimeo Pro account for both distribution and service to more public facing websites for commercial purposes — and discovered that clicking on the “Send to Vimeo Pro” inside Frame.io was virtually instantaneous. I realized that Frame.io and Vimeo both were using the same cloud distribution service – so all that was happening was adding a few pointers to the original cloud content repository, without the need to do any real processing.
I note it, because access to stock libraries is basically the same deal. The content already sits up in the cloud. Plumbing it into an NLE just takes a couple of things to be settled. First the IP rights stuff. (who “owns” the content” and the business stuff (which entity gets how much money when a clip is purchased.
The Adobe approach has kinda been like their software approach, everything remains primarily ADOBE property that you just rent. (Yes, they pay royalties to some asset creators, but Adobe manages everything and remains the “primary contractor” for all intents and purposes.”
Apple, OTOH, tends to form partnerships with external developers and lets those outside entities provide and manage their own services and content.
Less the “Company” model and more the “App Store” Model.
This seems consistent with that. It’ll be interesting to see whether Apple ever decides to let “links” to services like these exist directly inside the software – or maintains tighter control on their IP stuff, whether from security concerns or just a desire not to split their focus on another sub-business.
One thing that’s always fascinated me is the thought that someday, not just stock photos — but music, graphics, and a LOT more could conceivably be plumbed directly into these programs.
Maybe that’s top of mind, because just yesterday I saw an Acura commercial with the Stones “Sympathy for the Devil” – as it’s soundtrack. Yes, guys, our youthful anthems are now hawking luxury cars – who’s surprised! “Hope I die before I get old” gives way in time to “Cash in now before I get older…” I guess.
And so it goes.
One part of me thinks linking something like Vimeo directly into X would be awesome, another part of me feels it’s just more direct taps into impulse purchasing that seeks to remove impulse purchase friction with the primary goal of increasing sales.
I’m kinda not sure I want to be the 10,000th producer to use their AmEx card to license Hey Jude to improve a bride named Judy’s wedding video or use Walking in Memphis to add some extra heart to a conservative political candidates’ ad?
Sigh.
Life is sure complicated amidst all this change.

Remote power is a really interesting space these days.
I was looking at quiet generators the other day and saw a ton of units like this available on-line…
Pretty robust on-board battery array – inverter to feed AC, and rechargability via Edison, Automotive power, or solar array. I think the camping market makes economies of scale possible.
Combined with modern LED lighting and power sipping cameras – the traditional need for a gas powered generator might be fading a bit.
I bet two or three of these type things could light a decent remote location shoot pretty well for a few hours.

Wow, that’s truly interesting.
If you don’t mind me asking, what type of transcripts have you pulled from a wedding? Would it be for a best man speech type thing? Or perhaps something like a reception camera set up to do automated talking head best wishes? I’m having a bit of difficulty understanding how a transcript would help in an event type of situation.
I know modern weddings can be very big shoots at the high end, but I know little about them.
So has transcription use in modern event work become a normal thing?

Yeah, it might be a big enough sample if some real data scientists were digging in and both designing the poll and running the numbers, but it’s just an opt-in quick poll of those motivated to respond, and as such, definitely questionable for more than just idle conversation.

Understood. I can’t imagine there’s any way to concurrently let two LIVE timelines exist each reaching into the same database. Maybe as these databases grow more hooks, the facility folks or the live playout folks will prove to be a big enough night for the coders to take a shot at something like that. But I wouldn’t hold my breath. Sorry.

It is.
And this article is already more than a year old.
One reason that the media may be MORE obsessed with politics than normal, is that these huge forces are coming at us that will shape the future — and nearly ALL of our political leaders are basically re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic rather than facing these type of real issues.
Washington should have been testing models for universal income and other potential solutions and debating what happens if unemployment ever increases to “starving violent people” levels – instead of bitching about petty stuff.
My friends in some of those “socialist” countries that get derided by some voices constantly, have sent me articles about their governments doing all sorts of tests starting LONG AGO, trying to figure out the balance between suppressing self determination and encouraging people to keep getting up and going out to do productive work — against public programs that focus on keeping huge numbers of people from starving.
The debate isn’t easy when you don’t have ACTUAL data to back up your ideas. And the only way to GET such data is to develop models, run real-world trials, and test, test, test with real people.
Cuz if too many people get too hungry for too long, civil order becomes a luxury even rich people won’t be able to afford.

I don’t know if it’s responsive, but Peter Wiggins who runs FCP.co does a LOT of long form live to air work on FCP X. (He’s part of the team that covers the Tour de France and other large live sporting events every year for european broadcasters.) He’s written a LOT about editing growing files and live playout of the same.
You should check out the FCP.co site for some of his articles. He’s also a great guy and if you wanted to reach out and talk to him directly, I’d be happy to make an introduction.
Not saying what he does would work. But he knows the landscape really well on the Mac/FCP X side.

In their niche, VERY powerful. However, their niche isn’t particularly large, IMO.
It goes back to the same old argument. Is the larger “professional editing” landscape more like the one you are imagining or the one I have to work in daily.
My friend Braden Storrs (who helms one of the larger FB groups X oriented groups at around 30,000 members – is currently running a poll about the primary use for X among their members.
Right now, Corporate/Business is well in the lead. Commercials and Ads are next, falling off about 30%. Documentary and Non-Fiction is in 4th place, with about HALF the practitioners of Corporate.
You can interpret that in LOTS of ways, but for me, primarily, it says that most people use X for business videos simply because that’s the client pool that invests the most broadly and consistently in acquiring content. It’s where more money is spent in more places.
Are transcripts useful in some of those areas? Of course. But for every interview driven piece where transcripts can be key – there are lots of scripted and interview free content where transcripts are meaningless.
People are basically following the money.
And I do think the Machine Learning and Algorythmic stuff like that which Phil and Greg are working on, will eventually get rolled into all the NLEs. So transcriptions will become just another software provided expectation.
And so it goes. ????
