Well, with the benefit of 7 years of hindsight, those who analyzed it as “Apple no longer cares about pros” were being pretty stunningly short-sighted.
Roles wasn’t exactly designed for home movie shooters.
Few Weekend Warriors need ruthlessly optimized code that runs fast and stable, just to create their vacation videos.
And all that Rec2020 and ProRes RAW plumbing seems like s bit of a stretch for editors seeking improvement on their next cat video.
“Giving up on pros” started out as a canard – and remains one.
And so it goes.

A “review” of a creative work that says almost nothing about the actual creative work it purports to review?
Interesting approach.
And perfect in its own way.
What Off the Tracks does more than anything else is point out that the FCP X kerfluffle was never actually about the program itself very much at all – but about how the programs existance made different editors “feel.”
Ignored, slighted, empowered, confused, joyful, angry — it was a Rorschach test about the editor, him or herself, mostly.
The X launch confused everyone.
Some editors were moved from confusion to anger or disgust.
Others were moved from confusion to fascination and delight.
Powerful stuff.
And so it goes.

It requires close listening and the ability to remember stuff. And the meaning might not be what someone WANTS the meaning to be. So screw the MEANING of quotes – lets just use them with abandon!

Well, in fairness, it’s really easy to do what most of us have always done, which is to hold off on updating until we hear reports of how early adopters are faring – if we have work pending or can’t sequester a trial virtual machine in a safe partition.
Most of us are used to only updating our OS after the initial shipping bugs are identified and quashed.
Folks have been dealing with early release caution practices for decades now.

I don’t have a clue how many overall Macs are in use out there – how many of them attempt to stay current regarding their OS – or what percentage have which hardware to support which features.
But that said, there have to be hundreds of millions out there world wide.
So pushing a brand new OS is always GOING to break things for some subset of the global user set.
“Perfect” than ship – is dead EVERYWHERE now – on all platforms.
The new normal is Ship when it appears ready – than iterate towards perfection as the failure cases appear.Just the new normal.

I’ll just add that on virtually ALL the FCP X insider chat streams, the word appears to be “Migrate SLOWLY” and take care. Apparently Mojave includes some pretty deep changes – and this update, more than most, won’t be a just “go ahead and click and update” transition.

Bill Davis is head-down editing in FCP X right now – and having more fun than ever doing it!
There’s certainly no need to strike anyone down.
At the end of everything, I got everything I was hoping for and more. A new, better content creation tool, plus an entire world full of editors that also now understand the joys of X editing. What’s not to like?
I’ve got 9 fresh agency draft videos going out Friday – plus four large end of the year corporate review videos on-deck. In between, I’m doing volunteer work for a local marketing group that involves my first project in RAW, so I can better familiarize myself with the new workflows.
Seven years in, and I seriously don’t think I’ve regretted a single minute of my switch to X.
I thought I saw something special 7 years ago at it’s release — turns out that, for me, I was utterly correct.
Let BlackMagic and Premiere and AVID battle for the track-style thinkers and may every single one of them feel GREAT about their choice and have years of productive and creative work ahead!
I’m a magnetic storyline thinker now. And more confident than ever that I choose my correct path.
I am, however, extremely sorry to hear that some of your early days angst was perhaps driven by some measure of family loss. That’s something we all have to face as we continue to age – and I’m very sorry for your loss back then.

Well, if you are watching a grade that can manipulate up to 10,000 nits of luma range – on a screen that can only display 100 nits max – that seems like it would be a pretty serious issue.
The most easily understandable holy grail of this stuff is letting a desktop user do with motion video – what we’ve been able to do with RAW stills for decades.
Or hopefully even better!
Improved highlight and shadow recovery, is something we all want. And if HDR can ride along that would be great too.
But I’m just not seeing the monitor folks offering that very much as yet.
Time will tell.

Szymon and his team have been working on this for a LONG time.
I’m not a 3D Guy, but it looks like this is a pretty amazing leveraging of the Motion and FCP X host programs for those folks who want an easier path into planning and customizing the type of super complex custom motion graphics that the network sports shows and shaving commercials are so in love with.
I hope he succeeds wildly, because those folks work their butts off to create original code and programs of the highest possible quality.

I’m still the biggest color theory idiot here, but back when the new 10.4 Color Tools came out, it seemed to me that Apple was looking not just at grading as it’s been done in the past, but with building a toolset and interface that will gracefully deal with Rec2020 and the coming world of expanded dynamic range workflows.
My 2-bit theory is that the missing piece is still affordable desktop production suite monitoring.
When the Apple marketing team did their demo at the LACPUG last year, Steve Bayes kept suggesting we NOT look at the iMag system – but instead watch the large (clearly super expensive) deep color monitor they had setup on stage.My expectation is that the OLED elves are working on fixing this and that we might see some decent priced solutions at NAB 2019.
At that point — and IF the industry goes toward deep color — then I presume the color science in the new tools will be more important.
My observers 2cents.
