Probably just me, but when I sort by different criteria, different groups of posts appear or disappear from my pages. I just found half of these discussions that I totally missed a week ago.
Probably user error, but sorting “by thread” shows me a far smaller subset of these posts – while sorting “by recent” shows many different posts I haven’t read from weeks back.
Just a note for “management” if you’re working on the forum arrangement mechanics.
As to the topic at hand, I’m going to respectfully stay mostly out of this. If the name is something that attracts me to this spot, I’ll continue to be a presence. If I have to wade through over many posts debating topics that don’t concern me directly (which include lengthy discussions of other NLEs that I don’t use) I likely won’t.
If this is to morph into a sort of “all NLE” forum – that’s fine. But that is not what *I* am interested in. Because I don’t use “all” NLEs. I know some here wish to keep a wider NLE focus – and I respect that, but I don’t. This one is satisfying my particular needs incredibly well, and improving with each new release.
It attracted LOTS of eyeballs, to my understanding, precisely because it helped illuminate a CHANGE that we all had to come to grips with.
I question whether another, more generic forum brand will increase that, but that’s not for me to determine.
To the extent that place becomes the home to long threads about Resolve – and doesn’t focus on how X relates to Resolve – it likely won’t be my cup of tea, and not really worth my time. (I’d be debating something I’m ignorant about and I simply can’t imagine the need to go back to “track” thinking in NLE operations, since trackless editing fits my needs so well. Such is life.
Again, not saying the forum needs to be what *I* might want in ANY way. Just noting that for those of us who have selected our NLE – and don’t want to waste time engaging in MORE debate about other NLEs we don’t use – this just likely won’t be our home away from home like it’s been for the past decade.
And as X changes and continues to mature – or doesn’t (if it freezes in a couple of years after the 10 year plan is complete) IF this place has an increasing amount of “non-FCP X noise” – that simply means I’ll look elsewhere for keeping myself up to date on my tool. I have half a dozen active X forums I monitor, mostly Facebook Groups both public and private. And that’s enough to keep me content.
I’ll miss this if it changes into a more “general” forum, but oh well. Change is inevitable.
I hope the transition (whatever it is) is smooth and beneficial to all who have enjoyed this place – whether I’m a part of that or not.

What do you need to power? Modern cameras and reasonable LED lighting is typically fine on batteries, even for extended night time shooting.
If you need significant punch, like lighting up a broad area – all the “Home Depot” type stores sell simple gas-powered generators for a few hundred bucks. You have to accept some noise, so if you’re doing narrative and need to record dialog, that can be a hassle. But for B-Roll shoots, they are fine.
(Be careful with doing the grounding system as instructed, but other than that, they’re quite safe.)

The new names are all kinda “meh” to me.
The joy of this forum for me has always been that like any good debate, there was a opening proposal.
That was originally summed up in the forum name, itself.
FCP X or Not.
That can be debated.
Apple Talk – simply cannot. One is a debate. The other is just another among a hundred million water cooler sites on the web.
So I’d expect my contribution level will radically drop off after said name change, whatever it is. The original was a useful question to discuss. Apple the company, as a general topic – is done to death elsewhere.
No reason to do that here, when there are plenty of other outlets.

I’m just sorry you apparently don’t feel the same about whatever NLE you use.
Sitting down to get your work done every day with confidence and the anticipation of enjoyment doesn’t suck.
There’s enough stress in this business. Not facing a bunch from my software at this stage in the game, is actually pretty nice.
I guess I should feel bad or something about that. But I kinda don’t.

Uh, OK
I just posted this link so people could finally SEE how the new RAW Codec looks in an early practical application.
I’m sure there will be direct comparisons (likely even A/B split screens!) of ProResRAW verses the other approaches, coming our way in the future.
For now, and for those interested in going beyond “descriptions” of the new visuals and moving into ACTUALLY looking at the resulting pictures – I simply felt this might be of some interest.

Look, I totally understand the benefits of transcripts. And for many types of (especially long form work) yes, they’re a HUGE boon. And I’m sure they’ll continue to be used and continue to drive lots of efficiency into many workflows.
AND it’s great that they are being automated and developing even more usefulness in the era of speech to text and more AI in our software.
But I just feel that text on a page, by itself, will always be a distance from the speech you’re trying to locate.
In processing interviews, not having the ability to range reject OR select something that “reads well” but doesn’t PLAY well – seems to me a step backwards from what I’m doing now. Scanning everything is NOT the process I want. I typically want to “reduce to the best” as my initial pass. THAT is what saves me the most time going forward.
Basically, for me, unless you’re encoding that type of interpretative data, you’re really just settling for a shotgun to shoot at a bulls eye.
But that’s just me. Each editor has their own needs and style, as do each different project, often.
And so it goes.

I heard the cards will be about $10k each at launch. Hopefully the technology scales rapidly and gets down into the kind of pricing where it can spread wider, faster.

Why?
Some transcripts are useful – But I just as often fine them a significant waste of time.
How many times have you gone to find a clip that LOOKED ideal on a transcript, only to find that it’s a total mess, as recorded. Weird pauses and intonations that even if you frankenbited, would STILL make for a choppy and ugly soundbite.
One POINT of X, is that using it’s qualitative tags, you can rely on transcripts much less (by choice) and instead have a system to tag and save the ACTUAL best clips as you audition them. That way you KNOW the context and usefulness of those actualities in a fashion that reading them will never convey.
Basically, it’s not enough to know the guy said “I love you” on camera — it might be more critical to know if when he said it, he sounded sincere, sarcastic, distracted, or infatuated.
And X’s keyword tagging system lets you encode THAT in your prep – instead of just searching for a string of words.
We’re all getting pretty universal transcripts soon enough if Google Speech to Text continues to develop.
I think it’s time to look beyond the transcript. It’s pretty limited, when you think about it.
