    compressor is for changing formats

if you need to down convert and make progressive and take 16.9 to 4.3 then look to frame controls and geometry tabs

I have a little on it in podcast

compressor will always give better results than final cut pros open format timeline and so this is why I strongly suggest you use it

alternatively if you are going HDV then a blackmagic or kona card can downconvert on the fly and back to SD tape

July 30, 2008 at 8:45 am in reply to: Reality TV workflow!!

never done any reality tv edits, not posting to debate that only suggesting tools that may be of use

just thought it useful to mention the multiclip sequence feature

probably also good to say if anything shot HDV or XDCAM you need a good setup with transcoding to prores e.g. final cut server

I would also imagine an XSAN is also a necessity

and of course label the multiangle clips when capturing

it may be more useful to the first original poster to mention the tools and let him work out what is useful rather than debate The real world being the orginal format for reality TV

  • in FCP load timeline clip to the viewer

then add motion blur and set details from the motion tab

    wait quite a while

alternatively in Motion app you could try some sort of time filter like strobe or even a speed behaviour

dont use the speed changes in motion as suggested here this will not make any difference unless actually asking for changes to the speed

if more nice control needed look into reel smart plugin for motion blurring

if you have a look at the podcast I have made up for Cow there is a little video on setting up qmaster for quick cluster

also useful to point out to newbies to batching that quicktime reference movies and copying from one drive where media to other physical drive will also drastically improve compressor speeds, as will sending FCP quicktime movie (not self contained and using this temp file into compressor rather than exporting straight from fcp to compresor)

funny to see someone else with my name using benscottproductions as website nothing to do with myself

April 1, 2008 at 6:18 pm in reply to: HDV or ProRes to get best MPEG2 for SD DVD??

i agree if just straight editing then keep in native hdv, although when do you not apply effects.

sorry to complicate things but think it important to note

if doing effects it is recommended to render HDV to prores (i put in a recent podcast)

therefore it may be that most of your timeline may be in prores and not HDV so you would probably be best in that instance to be sending out prores qt and then encoding from that

also prores should transcode quicker than hdv

  • it matters which color space you are going to be printing out with surely 701 or 601?

and therefore the bars matter surely

are you saying it is only SD output in color as that sounds wrong?

  • was wondering if it is worth mentioning the real time down convertions of HD with black magic and kona cards.

are these better conversions than simply putting HD in an SD sequence and letting final cut pro do its not so good scaling

I have had prores 720p footage (from the FCP6 diana weynand book) downconverting really nicely to sd but had quite a bit of flickering with HDV footage which I am pretty sure was 1080 50i sony camera. I use a blackmagic card.

also how would you set color bars for such a sequence, it is a prores HD sequence and then put hd bars in and then on sd monitor color balance to that from the downconverted source?

or is it only going to work for color correction with sd sequence, reason I am asking is that many people are shooting HD and then downconverting to sd and the grading, at which stage do they grade in Color for instance, with it downcovnverting in the blackmagic card?

March 13, 2008 at 10:49 pm in reply to: connecting JVC BR-HD50 deck to mac

I have been testing different footage this week and had real problems capturing JVC 1080 HD 24p PAL version and tried using the camera and it has some really weird issues with capturing only cpature now and misses few seconds of each clips and if not set to very loose user preferences (no drop frame detection) it just wont capture

so What I am interested in have people got this JVC HD deck to capture the footage without same issues via firewire or is it just poor through firewire and needing HDMI and rs422 cable for device control. I know I have had a whole load of problem with older JVC pro DV and a JVC dv/vhs player (buggy machines)
