[David McGiffert] “Nothing happens”
What were you expecting? A window opens with your sequence name in, and you have to select the video and audio compression you require. Then it compresses it.
Are you saying you don’t get this option? Highlight the sequence in the browser, and hit export to compressor. Select as above, hit start, get batch export window.
Any of this happening?
There’s a good section on compressor in the manual.

[morgster] “Can anyone offer any pointers?”
Don’t expect an SD DVD to look anywhere near as good as the HD source. It’s a rough, pixellated format…
Just a thought…

I assume you have the earlier version MBP that had a lot of issues with heat. Certainly, my Core 2 Duo MBP runs cooler and quieter than my old G4 powerbook with FCP.
All laptops will run at full tilt when rendering in FCP, or indeed FCE (it’s the same processor work after all, in both apps) so I don’t know why your friend would make such a bizarre claim. Yes, they run hot, but that’s not a reason not to use FCP, something I use frequently on a MBP, and did on my G4. No, it won’t be as fast as a Mac Pro, but that’s the case with all apps on all laptops. Don’t expect any solution, homemade or otherwise to magically improve your render times.
Since you post no system specs, I don’t know how much RAM you have fitted on your system, but I would recommend having at least 2Gb installed. You will find this makes a considerable difference to the laptop’s performance.
Finally, I would question ANY workflow using MPEG as an edit format. It’s not the best solution by a long chalk. Using a short-GOP format like DV will help all your render times in all likelihood, and take pressure off the processor.

As I understand it, this is the problem with this controller – there are issues with over-writing keyframes. Manually delete them as described in the other reply. Consider the Mackie or Tascam controllers if you want to avoid this long term.

From the apple pdf:
‘Because the Final Cut Server software is server based, a single update to the server
allows any user to benefit from the latest features at login; there is no need to push
updates or distribute software patches to client computers.’‘Set up your Final Cut Pro project in Final Cut Server and check it out to begin editing. If

You are obviously experienced enough to check the sequence setting, and you have most probably checked the capture settings too – and I assume the two match in terms of physical size and anamorphic setting?
Does the footage look letterboxed when played back on tape (ie. when you look at the monitoring output of the deck)? It’s very unusual that anything is shot letterboxed – I don’t even know of a camera that will do it – especially 16:9.
That leaves us with a settings problem. Double check that when you open the captured footage that it opens in a 16:9 window. Apple+9 on the captured clip, and check the anamorphic box is ticked on the properties. When it’s dropped into the timeline, click on it and check under the motion tab to make sure the aspect ratio is set to 0 under the distort settings.
Don’t panic. It’s most probably an unchecked box somewhere or other…

It’s a bodge, but you can also increase the gain of a clip by more than 12db by nesting the audio layer and opening the nested sequence in the viewer (ctrl click and select ‘open in viewer’).
This does not require renders, can gives you more range…

Wow. That’s quite a broad brief. I’ll let others guide you on HDV, but I can tell you that any talk of Fibre Channel array is way over the top. You would only need so expensive a system for Uncompressed 10-Bit HD. To work with HDV or DVCProHD you could make do with a far less expensive and more reliable SATA array – something you could do internally on a Mac Pro. No one knows how ProRes will shake out – although for HD it looks pretty exciting.
Some of the storage ideas you have mentioned are $10K options, and are almost certainly overkill for what you suggest. Frankly, unless you are interested in Uncompressed HD I would set your sights lower.
Please – take some professional advice from a reseller who stocks a range of storage options. I am sure some of the forum member from your part of the world can help. Please fill out your profile to allow people to assist you further.
Good luck.

I recommend that you stop listening to your friend and get yourself to a Pro reseller who can match your storage requirements in terms of speed and size to your project requirements.
The decisions you have to make are more involved than whether to fit a fibre-channel card or not – the type of interface, be it firewire, SATA, SCSI or FC really depends on the type of media you work with and the quality and quantity of storage you need. We don’t know from your original questions what work you do on what formats. Knowing this will enable people here to give you more specific advice – although obviously everything that Shane said was totally correct.
Please don’t think I’m being flippant – I just get the feeling you need to get some more direction here before you make purchasing decisions, as storage is such a minefield.

If trashing prefs does not work, open the project from a previously autosaved version – the project file may be corrupted. You can browse directly to the autosave folder and open the latest autosaved version by clicking on it to open fcp. Note that trashing prefs will have stopped FCP from trying to open the dodgy project and crashing.
See how you go – most times this works for me. And as a side note, since FCP5 I have not really had this problem (that I can remember) although I’m sure others have in all probability.
