You need to offline at the same frame size as the online – otherwise FCP cannot possibly undertand what scaling to apply. All relinking does it make FCP reference a different file.
Hope that helps (but suspect it doesn’t)

[Josh Snider] “an anyone recommend a small digital camera that can take video?
Something that takes footage that doesn’t require rendering in FCP? “Yup. They’re called DV cameras. They’re cheap, the quality is far better than memory stick camcorders (at the price), the tapes are dirt cheap and you can keep them forever or reuse them. DV requires no rendering in FCP. You can tell FCP what sections to capture and have a nice cup of tea whilst it does it (or coffee if you must).
Why on earth would you want to use a cheap memory stick camcorder with an expensive piece of edit software?
Hope that helps.

If you don’t use motion (and possibly if you do – haven’t tested mine yet), just go with the stock gfx card – it’s a lot better than the old stock one, and fine for the above mentioned apps. Also, if you go for the upgrade, it’ll slow up your shipping (last time I checked). If you do decide to upgrade it later, you can buy a fairly inexpensive upgrade and do it yourself (doesn’t even involve a screwdriver on the new Mac Pros!), so don’t fret if you find you need to move up.
I would put 8Gb of RAM in, OWC will sell you it for a few hundred dollars (shipped worldwide) so don’t get it from Apple. Installing RAM is now SO SIMPLE my mother could do it, as the risers just slot in and out. FCP prefers an equal amount of RAM on each riser in pairs, so it’s a good middle figure, whilst allowing for an upgrade later. You will be able to run all three apps you mention together with few problems – I know it sounds like a lot, but…
See:
https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-MemoryFor the 800mhz memory – and go for the 4x2Gb option at $439.00
Why?
https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304492For what it’s worth, I went for the 3.0Ghz processors, as it’s still more powerful than the old most powerful machine, but you don’t pay a silly premium for the ‘fastest’ config at a large extra expense.
Wack in 3x750gb drives (good size/value balance) for a fast RAID 0 array that will cover your media needs, and avoid having to lug an external array around if you need to move about with the system. Again, OWC can sell you these, along with many many others.
Other than that, all I put in mine was the wireless upgrade, and Applecare.
Hope that helps!

PS – It’s a lovely machine inside, however I had to remove the fans on mine and reposition some cables to the front of them as they were rubbing on the fans – made a horrible noise! Bad Apple… On the plus side, putting RAM in is stupidly easy, as is fitting your own drives etc.

February 4, 2008 at 2:18 am in reply to: Re-interlacing footage at the broadcasters request: normal or not?Little of what you said has been either accurate or of any use to him. The arguments you make about frame resolution and field resolution were just wrong, and do not apply when you are dealing with 25p versus 50i – most especially when mastering from FCP, which does not cause any loss in resolution when dealing with progressive footage.
As I said repeatedly, the only difference between these two choices (and not some other irrelevent NTSC or 24p options that seem to have drifted into this discussion) is motion information, and the overall look resulting from it.
Normally I wouldn’t bother continuing this discussion, but I re-read it, and I’m not sure why you continue to weigh in and confuse the original poster. As Graham says below, 25p is widely accepted – not just by the BBC (who know a few things about video quality) but also every other broadcaster I have worked for. It’s very simple really, and much of this thread drifts into tangents that just don’t help and just aren’t right.
Sorry.

Have you considered Soundtrack Pro? I hear it’s very nice to use, and you seem to be willing to take on new software. It will also give you an easy import/export path from FCP and allow you to do fun things like 5.1 mixes!

I don’t know iDVD, but quicktime player needs to be told to play back your video at the correct anamorphic frame size, as it doesn’t take the anamorphic flag from fcp.
If in PAL, in QuickTime player select movie information from the view menu, then select the video track in the list, then change the playback size to 1024×576 (from memory).
Dont have a laptop with me, so my naming may be a little off. This will allow you to view your anamorphic video correctly in quicktime player – don’t know about iDVD, but DVD studio pro asks you whether each track is 16:9 or 4:3.
Hope this helps a little

February 3, 2008 at 7:32 pm in reply to: Re-interlacing footage at the broadcasters request: normal or not?Not that I’m sure I can be bothered to weigh in further, the end of the last post should probably say “difference between 50i and 25p”, since these are the two choices.
In the UK and other PAL countries i have delivered to, both are acceptable based on the series format. The basis of this conversation was some seemingly ill informed comments. I think we disproved them, but I’m not really sure any more.

February 2, 2008 at 11:40 pm in reply to: Re-interlacing footage at the broadcasters request: normal or not?Whether or not the resolution is reduced by playback on an interlaced display is immaterial – An interlaced master has the same field resolution. The only difference for playback is that the interlaced rushes have smoother more ‘video’ motion, with different video on each field – but they don’t have full resolution fields – that’s what interlacing is for as I’m sure you’re aware.
The real difference is how each format deals with motion – not overall resolution, and the effect is a subjective one, when you are dealing with the difference between 576p25 and 576i50. Yes, the progressive image has less motion information, but that’s not really the point here, and there are many advantages to mastering and shooting progressive (such as DVD mastering and the increased perceived vertical resolution when viewed on a progressive display – like all those LCD TVs we have now).
I take your point, but I don’t think that’s relevant to the station tech’s comments, which just sound ill-informed. He wasn’t complaining about the resolution, he just didn’t like the motion.

February 2, 2008 at 10:18 pm in reply to: Re-interlacing footage at the broadcasters request: normal or not? There is no resolution loss at 25p. If your project stands alone, there is no technical reason to reject a 25p master – bodging the fields with fieldkit cannot restore motion that is not there, it’s a nonsense. And I take your point about motion not looking ‘jerky’ – it’s just a different look, as I said.
