You’re a little vague about formats, but if you are compositing AE in FCP, you should use the animation codec to export from AE – It will allow you to use the alpha in FCP, and give you the maximum quality throughout.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for an informed and timely discussion (for me anyway!). This has tipped me towards the 24″ JVC, which I have ordered today.
Chiefly, given the overall thumbs up for picture quality and colour, I felt I could not ignore a full 1080 display for this money, especially with the nifty audio and timecode display above. Also a DP friend had used the Panny, and declared the waveform display ‘a little crude’. Frankly, I’m not comfortable with any on-screen solution, I’d rather a proper separate display.
It also has a full set of connections built in (take note Sony) and is 19″ rack-mountable into the bargain. Lastly, I understand it has a little more motion blur than the Panny. I think that’s a smaller consideration than a sharp image for colour correction, as you’re more often looking at individual frames – and also when you bear in mind the flat-screen viewing public, perhaps it’s not a bad thing to be reminded of the short-comings of your viewer’s screens once in a while. Something has to give at this price.

Apologies for OT post – just a bit timely for me, with purchases required this week. The Cow also had a thread about the exact monitor choice I was making – all a bit serendipitous, so I couldn’t resist the question.
Good to hear your positive response, always had a good time with BM products before – think I’m going with this option. I’m not a big fan of laptop HD, and since I prefer to use the BOB with the Kona cards anyway, I may as well go for the MBPro, giving me a standalone device into the bargain.
Back on the actual topic, I work regularly with internal and external RAIDs. I am constantly impressed with the speed and responsiveness of our 3x500Gb array, used primarily for Uncompressed SD, and far prefer it in the many situations where I have to take the tower on site. Seperate arrays are universally heavy, hate travel and add to the bulk considerably.

It’s not totally moot. the Canvas in FCP does not display the full raster, so anything looks worse on it – especially smaller text. Rendering out to other formats often gives a better look than the view in the canvas. FCP was designed to work in tandem with an external video monitor.

On this topic, and speaking as a long time Kona user (and fan mostly) I have gone back and forward over the whole LHE/IO HD debate, and then took a long long look at the Decklink Multibridge Pro. Fundementally it gives me the option to capture uncompressed HD, with all the connectivity of the IO HD (broadly speaking) at the cost of the LHE. And it’s a standalone converter like the IO HD. I even like the PCI-E interface. Also, I’ve had a few problems with PAL field order on some recent jobs on an LH, and I never had that with the Blackmagic cards. Sure, I can’t plug it into a MBP, but editing HD on a laptop is a bad proposition to me anyway.
Feel a bit if a traitor even looking at the competition (and yes, I know about the Kona customer care, although it’s not such a compelling argument when you live outside the USA), but you can’t argue with the price/features.
Can anyone persuade me otherwise?

QT player on the Mac doesn’t support DVCPro either unless the codec is installed – FCP installs this and other pro codecs.

According to Wikipedia, the ever excellent and free MPEG Streamclip will play and convert HDV files (since they’re just MPEG-2 video).

I’ve just googled Episode and see that it’s made by the Flip4Mac people. So I suppose it should do what you want. I have never used it, although I have used the somewhat cheaper Flip4Mac Pro (on the same website at http://www.flip4mac.com) sucessfully to make .wmv files in the past.

By ‘edit’ do you mean ‘mark an in and out and put in the timeline’, or do you mean ‘apply filter or motion’?
If it’s the former, you should not need to render the clip unless the sequence settings are not the same as the clip. Check your capture settings and sequence settings.
If the render is needed because of a filter or re-sizing, sometimes a render will be required, depending on your system specs, codec used and realtime setup. With RT on, and the framerate and resolution set to ‘dynamic’ in the timeline, you can achieve a lot of realtime previews depending on the above.
This is a pretty big question – you can find a lot of the answers in the manual (it’s pretty good) and you may also find the ‘basics’ forum on the Cow helps.

Sorry, got to disagree. I have just returned from using a MBP with the hi-def screen for a 5 day job, and at the higher resolution, the GUI was horrible. Buttons too small, text too small etc. Gave me eye strain – really. Sure, you can drop the resolution, or alter some of the font sizes, but that kind of defeats the object, doesn’t it?
Bottom line, the highest resolution on a screen this size is worthless. I would get the standard def MBP and buy a 23″ cinema display, where that extra resolution can be properly used.
