Good luck with that. I notice AVID have so far only announced support for boxes using embedded audio – so no PRO-IO, or anything other than HDSDI. Seems to me that’s so they don’t hurt sales of their own (more expensive) Nitris boxes. Also, MC with Nitris offers considerably faster encoding for output than a software only solution (our own broadcast testing shows 40 x real time encoding for our tapeless system on export, and nothing like that with software only.

I don’t know how I feel about using an AVID hardware system that’s not optimised for the software – I think I’d rather just buy some HP workstations and Nitris DX boxes and be done with it…

Apple were entirely specific about this in the presentation: No upgrade pricing, just a single purchase price for anyone of $299.

This is another reason why I don’t get the pricing debate (aka the ridiculous “it’s too cheap” argument), as not only is the price for a single app, but even if it’s not (which I secretly suspect it isn’t – there’s more to come at this price) most people will be upgrading, and would only have paid $299 or very similar to update. There’s 2m users after all…

I think the reactions of some regulars here proves the point – and as far as Walter’s points go, FCP 3-6 all have pretty identical support needs – FCP X is a new piece of software in almost every respect.

I think this means there’s a lot longer to support 2 very different apps (there’s plenty of people here still on FCP4.5) than people comment.

Also – people WANT to ask questions, some to speculate, and some to get reassurance not to panic etc. I think they should be able to do that without being shot down by people. In all honesty, too much of that goes on already.

+1 – I watched this yesterday and felt a lot more reassured. I still don’t understand why Apple didn’t release this properly themselves. I know it’s a ‘sneak peek’ and we have Larry Jordan saying there’s more to come, but this was a room with 1700 people in, and this ships in June – so only 2 months away. This better be near complete.

I get the feeling this is something I’m going to be running on a test system and laptop for a while before it goes anywhere near my broadcast kits – even assuming my third party hardware and plugins all work with it in June, which I doubt. Randy Ubilos stating that it’s beta and he hopes it doesn’t crash made me nervous – unless we are to believe they showed at earlier version that hid a lot of features they don’t want to announce now. But if that’s the case – why? You only get one chance to make a first impression…

Camera import button top left of timeline – looks like it will be a unified import tool, so maybe this is where log and capture went.

The desktop is reminiscent of iMovie, sure, but also of Aperture, and that I like. Also, note the pretty familiar menu bar at the top. I’m guessing once you scratch the surface a bit more, you see quite a bit that’s more familiar.

Right now, it looks like ‘learn from scratch’, but also ‘won’t take long to learn’.

Thank you for that reasoned, first hand view. A lot of hysterical nonsense will be posted here until Apple clears up some stuff, but do we really think they’re abandoning the pro ecosystem (plugins, hardware etc) – no, but of course it’ll need a few months (I’m betting 6) for most things to run properly. That’s cool – I’ve waited years for a proper update, and last time I checked FCP7 still works.

I think it’s also significant they stated at the top this works with Snow Leopard – this means most drivers etc should be easy to port. It also means we probably haven’t seen an end to QT gamma issues yet – but Lion / QTX pro isn’t far off. Smart move – we probably go through more pain in an OS update than anything else…

And seriously? The OP wants to go to Avid because they just spent 10k on software and it now costs less? 1) Grow up. Try asking a Final Touch user about this and 2) This price is likely for FCP ONLY. Not the rest of the suite. Anyway – if you want to spend another 10k on Avid licenses, be my guest. Oh – make sure you spend 100k on Nitris DX breakouts to make it fly, or spend another 2 years wondering when Avid will allow you to use your Kona cards with MC (so they can shut down their hardware business for good and try to compete with Apple on software prices). Good luck with that.

I’m also glad Apple has said ‘stay tuned’ about the other apps – but I’m assuming they’ve unbundled them now – good. I probably wouldn’t bother with Motion at all if it wasn’t included in FCS, I’d use AE all the time. And no one asked me for a DVD in about 2 years….

I feel more positive after seeing this – the screenshots will only add flames to the ‘iMovie Pro’ fire – an accusation that just doesn’t seem fair. Look at the context sensitive windows and hints of HUDs in these – this is how a modern GUI SHOULD work, not a bunch of windows. Looks smart to me.

I’m not going to be a fanboy and say I’m ecstatic about everything until I’ve seen a proper demo in use, and I’m going to take it on faith that XML, multiple audio outs etc. as well as compatibility with third party hardware and IS coming (and I won’t be switching until it is), but all in all, I’m glad we have a new approach.

I’ve spent 10 years in a single interface. As scary as a brand new one looks, the only question I want answered is 1) Will it fit my workflow and 2) Will it do it quicker? Whether or not people like the new colours, or think the GUI looks like iMovie is irrelevent – but in the absence of anything else to say, that’s all anyone will complain/rave about for now.

Apple would do well to ensure some proper demo videos get onto the web PRONTO. A few hardware companies (AJA, BM especially) announcing immediate plans to be compatible will help – but I really don’t think that’s a big concern. Apple wouldn’t go to any of this trouble for an app that can’t leave the desktop.
