    Hi Andy

Have you heard anything more about this? The Video Expo site itself makes no mention of Apple (but has AVID as a sponsor – sounds familiar!), and I’m hearing that FCPX won’t be out until the end of June at the earliest. I can’t make the Supermeet, but I’d be tempted to go to this as an alternative. Might be worth getting a ticket anyway before anything is firmed up, but I’m a little dubious at the moment…

May 7, 2011 at 4:21 am in reply to: Question About “Render Lines”??

Rather than me posting a long explanation here, have a look at the manual (accessible in FCP) -but just to say that both the bars you describe allow for real time playback, without quality loss, but in the case of the green bar, video will still have to be rendered (either when you export or before) before being exported in your chosen codec. You can use ‘auto render’ to make the machine do this automatically when you are away from the edit.

Finally, you’re better to do this separately before exporting, as if you let FCP do this on an export, the timeline will revert to its unrendered state after the export, meaning you’ll have to wait all over again for it to first render, then export, the next time.

Fortunately, this will also soon be a thing of the past…

May 5, 2011 at 3:05 pm in reply to: remember the old days!

Dennis – AVID support minimal third party IO devices like the AJA IO Express, which only offer embedded audio, and are therefore not a challenge for their own, expensive Nitris DX boxes for installation and broadcast work. I note they’ve been very slow to support anything like a Kona 3 or Matrox MXO2. I’ll not hold my breath for this whilst hardware remains important to them, as it surely should. As soon as AVID becomes effectively a software company (as this could make them) they’d have to get into a price war with a competitor about to release a $299 product.

I’d hope the FCP pricing could make AVID and ADOBE think again about their ridiculous pricing (which in Adobe’s case leads to massive piracy and DRM so restrictive it took me a week to get a working serial number on my CS3 upgrade) but again – won’t hold my breath….

May 3, 2011 at 6:01 pm in reply to: Quad Core iMacs. “Mac Pro who?”

Just to temper the discussion (and based on very little info about FCP X) I’d note that Thunderbolt is not yet ready for high end gfx expansion – it only amounts to around 4xPCI lanes – not the 16 that something like a Fermi-touting card needs, so this might be a factor in GPGPU intensive software, which FCP X ought to be, as well as CS5.5 Cuda support.

However – I recall Philip Hodgetts (I think) saying he heard that FCP X ran amazingly well on a Macbook AIR. If so, an iMac should smoke it…

    For editorial use though, forgeddaboutit.

May 3, 2011 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Quad Core iMacs. “Mac Pro who?”

For anyone considering an upgrade from older Mac Pros:

We used a 2008 8-Core 3.0Hhz Mac Pro alongside a 2010 quad core 2.97 i7 (or was it i9) iMac last year, and the iMac was 10-20% faster on renders.

I’m guessing the newer iMacs would smoke all but the newest Mac Pros.

As soon as I have my Matrox thunderbolt cable, I’m travelling with an iMac.

If you are importing as ProRes, you should note that FCP6 only supports certain types – I think standard ProRes and ProRes HQ. Not LT or 4444.

May 3, 2011 at 10:23 am in reply to: Double strike short cut key

It looks like right clicking on (for example) the slide tool (usually assigned to ‘ss’) brings up a dialogue saying this key combination is locked and cannot be deleted. I’m guessing from this you cannot alter the double/triple/quadruple key modifiers already set (as per the toolbar) – but then they only exist on a few key tools. As such, I don’t believe they are something you can do on ANY key. Why not just find an unused key (there are plenty I never use) and put it there, so it’s a single key selection?

  • I feel exactly the same way -I’ve never been a regular AVID editor, but work in broadcast inevitably brings it into view and use sometimes. Often I’m picking up slack from a couple of AVID suites on an FCP system (or when the UNITY has gone down for the third time).

I actually find it offensively old to look at, can’t stand the jumble of windows (which necessitate the second monitor) and don’t see any real improvement (the smart tool is a cludge designed for FCP switchers).

I hope AVID aren’t handed a load of new business by the FCP X debacle (the sneak peek has caused more angst than it should have – and seems like a rushed demo forced on Apple as NAB loomed, when surely they wanted a full release in April). Why? Because a company flogging decade old software and overpriced hardware add-ons deserves a bit of a kicking, when instead, they may be handed the pro industry on a plate (at least for the moment).

My hope? FCP X will realise it’s potential – not because I’m a fanboy, but because it represents real change and the potential for improvement in a market that is starting to stagnate. Stick with the old if you want – it’s never been my style…

May 1, 2011 at 3:33 pm in reply to: render limit?

There was a bug in 7.0 that caused this in duplicated timelines – it was solved in 7.0.1 as far as I know, so ensure you have the latest version via software update.

Otherwise, if it happens a lot you have a bad install, or your FCP preferences are corrupted, or both. Use FCP rescue or FCP maintenance pack, and reinstall the whole suite from scratch if possible – this is one reason why an edit system should not have a lot of other software on it.

I can assure you this is NOT typical behavior for FCP suites.

If it’s only exporting a little section of the sequence, you have probably set an in and out point on the timeline by accident. You can get rid of them by right clicking on the top bar of the timeline (just above the render color-bar) and selecting ‘clear in and out’ – or use the help search function to find this shortcut.
