[walter biscardi] “Once I have my questions answer on what FCP includes / doesn’t include then we’ll be able to move forward. In the meantime, discussions continue with other vendors.”
Why? I’m genuinely curious. You’ll find out in a couple of weeks, and you have a perfectly good FCP7 based facility that doesn’t have to integrate with other systems (in direct contrast to my own business), so why not wait until you actually have a product to compare before speaking to AVID?
I’m keeping my options open (although I already hear enough from my peripheral suppliers to allay most of my fears), but it seems pointless to compare anything until we have SOMETHING to compare it with.
Like you, I make little use of Motion, as current results are better in AE (including far better particle plugins), but am pleased to see more peeks of pro features. And apps. Not that I had any real reason to doubt they were there somewhere. I’m glad, based on current info, I won’t have to pay for them if I don’t use ’em. But again – who knows. Maybe it’s free with FCPX? Wouldn’t surprise me entirely.

I would think it’s very naive to think Apple have not considered this possibility. After all, the sensible pricing of FCP X removes the need for people to try to work-around the current licensing with the likes of little snitch etc. Apple are betting more people will pick up multiple copies.
In addition, they already have volume pricing for FCS. I’m guessing there will not be discounting for X along the same lines, given the lower cost, but it will be there.
Calm down everyone.

For anyone interested where the rather vague quote above came from:

Hi Chris
Thanks for the reply! That’s an interesting approach, glad to hear it worked well, as it looks like I’ll be doing this in a few months – I was planning on a SAN via a Gig-E switch as opposed to a Server/RAID storage setup, but I can’t see too many differences. EVS also have some new software for browsing the XT network directly from the FCP suites.
Love to talk more about this – hopefully we can get in touch.

It might be more relevent to ask this question when FCP X is released in June – FCP7 makes little use of multiple cores or GPUs. You’ll see some speed increase going from 2.0 to 2.2 clock speeds. The GPU will probably make little difference. However, I’d be tempted to say this might all change soon…
Whilst using FCP7, look for processors that support turbo boost, as the extra clock speed available to cores for rendering makes a difference.

You could purchase ‘last-gen’ Mac Pros from professional resellers for very reasonable prices soon, when the new ‘thunderbolt’ Mac Pros rear their head soon. Even the 6-core ones would be a vast improvement over your G5s.
If you move to Adobe, whilst I have no problem with it, you’ll have to pay Adobe’s prices, whereas you already own the software you need – and can pick up cheap upgrades to FCS3. In addition, FCP X will be $299.
No brainer for an existing FCP setup.

Very nice ticket sale boost, awfully convenient.
Anyway, I’m also hearing reliably there will be no more demos in June (apparently this was always the case) and X may be out in July.
I think I’ll save the trainfare to London.

I too would like to respond to your so-called points one by one, Mr so called fancy pants pro gardener (if indeed, that is what you are, which I doubt actually).
First – 64 bits is horrible. It’s not even a round number. PPro will be 70 bits soon, in fact it has been since before I was born. And it already has everything iMovie does anyway.
Second – I’m appalled Apple expects me to pay for software, I was assured in this version I would be PAID by Apple for my loyalty, thereby ensuring (is thereby a word? It is now) Adobe would be forced to charge less than $1000 for my upgrade from 5.5 to 5.6 and Avid would have to charge less than $9000 for a PCI card in a big breakout box.
Thirdly – I love iMovie, and I’m convinced it’s the future of pet based edit solutions.
Fourthly – Of course Apple didn’t show us everything in the so-called keynote. Randy (Ha!) Ubilos should have lifted the curtain and revealed the Render Elves.
Fifthly – Even my mum doesn’t use PPro. The only people using PPro are those lunatics who bought RED cameras. They love it. Shows what you know.
Sixth – Steve Jobs LOVES pro users. He told me when he tucked me in last night. Using Apple products gives me a sense of entitlement and smug superiority don’t ya know – not because they are well designed, well priced (HA!) and reliable. AVID’s are good because they run on Windows, so you get to clench your buttocks every time a client gives you content on a USB stick, and wonder if it will include a ‘present’ like NetIntruder235. Or you can run it on Macs, and get support from… err…. *whistles*. Adobe software runs best on Macs. Which proves how much Steve loves PPro’s as well. Err..
Seventhly – I have NEVER had a life. Any so-called Pro editor could have told you that. All I had were hollow, awful moments where I stared awkwardly at the screen whilst the minutes ticked by. I will miss them like a dockside hooker misses crabs.
And Lastly – Color is not dead. It’s resting. When it’s back, it will be called Monochrome, because that’s cooler. It will not allow anything other than black and white, just like the good old days, when AVID’s interface was designed.
I think the Reverend Mooney’s god, and I’m going to give him all my money. Thank you.

Motion is an option, but as a pro solution, you’d be much better off doing this in AE, or even Photoshop (which has pretty good animation options, and can do a lot with your stills).
FCP is not designed for this – as you point out. Suggest to your post supervisor he uses something that is…

Yeah – I’m hearing no Apple demos in June, nothing at these shows of FCP X. I might go anyway – I bought a couple of tickets on the off-chance and maybe to ‘network’ (not that I find it makes any difference to my business). Would have been nice to see it in person, maybe get a few more details – but these may be forthcoming anyway, just not at a show…
Shame you can’t go – would have been nice to meet a fellow COW in person for once! Chances are, some job will keep me away as well…
