Blackmagic tell me that FCPX is a completely new product, and they are continuing to work with Apple to develop a solution for it – but they don’t have one yet.
Whilst, like everything else with X, it’s probably just a matter of time before it gets sorted, it may come too late for a lot of people.

Well, it let me install it (and I purchased it from the laptop). It’s not on the Apple list, so I guess it’s ok.
I’m taking delivery of some quad core iMacs tomorrow with 2Gb gfx cards and 16Gb of RAM. I’m guessing they’ll be fast.
However, I was expecting more from a lower spec system – even rendering of ‘basic’ inbuilt effects seemed slow. No good for any of my mobile jobs – and I thought that might be a first use.

I’m sure it’s a factor Chris – that’s why I wanted to see what performance others were seeing on different systems. I was under the impression that this software would even run well on an Macbook Air (I recall this comment being made by one of the ‘gurus’ posting advance info.
I’d expect it to run at least as well as FCP7 on all my systems. It seems on many, including a unibody MBP, which does not support 16Gb RAM, I may be sh*t out of luck. I thought this kind of powerful laptop editing would be a primary first use of FCPX, before the big systems get compatible.
It appears I am wrong.

[Tom Daigon] “If youd like to walk to work and wait until they figure out the wheels , thats fine. I dont have that luxury.”
Really? What changed from last week? Is there a new version of CS out? i must have missed something.
FCPX was never going to hit every goal of users from day 1 – it’s a new product, and the core needs to be stable and workable first. There’s no question in my mind that XML etc. will follow.
It does seem to me that there is a mass of FCP-bashing going on here from current Adobe and Avid users – I wonder to what purpose? If you’re already using these products, what do you care what Apple has out now?
I like the experiment – and Apple have an existing product I can use for now.

[alexander thompson] “I waited for the last week in the expectation I could finish this urgent promo vid on the new version, instead i download it in a hurry only to find I can’t import my project from FCP7. its actually a joke.”
Looks like we have a winner of David’s contest “who will be the first to complain they can’t finish their urgent project on software they just downloaded”. Sorry – this was a terrible idea. I actually wonder if you’ve posted this as a joke, or you work for AVID.
FCP7 is still there, and it still works. If you use FCP for a living, please continue to use it.
I would be more polite, but really…

I can do ‘chirpy corporal’. Frankly, with my 40th a few months away I’m delighted – it’s a bit like being asked your ID in an American bar….

How on earth could you possibly know that? I spend plenty of time with AVIDS thanks.
I do like the way AVID users magically gravitate to this forum when it’s mentioned negatively. Do you think any FCP users are checking the AVID forums?

I expected plug-ins to be the last thing to be compatible. Maybe some smaller ones never will. I also expect that the big names (maybe Genarts and Red Giant etc) will already be working with X on new versions.
Apart from stemming an NAB-without-new-FCP panic, Apple’s announcement almost certainly allowed them to seed code to big names in software and hardware, in exactly the same way as announcing iOS 5 does.
Not saying they’ll be there at launch (hey, Apple will need a couple of .0.1 releases themselves probably) but I don’t expect to wait a year for them either.
Deep breaths.

[Craig Seeman] “So if you get a MacPro now you should be fine with PCIe slots. A year or two from now might be a very different world though.”
That’s why I’m delaying new Mac Pro purchases. I’d rather wait for a new form factor, thunderbolt model with new processors. If I need other units in the next few months, I’ll purchase used probably – to be honest, to run FCP7, my 8-Core 3.0Ghz Xeons are still just as quick as most 12-cores. And this will eventually change. I can wait.
