Aindreas – you need to chill out. You were screaming about X after the peek. Now you’re screaming again. Is it possible this is another over-reaction? I worry about your health.

I see nothing wrong with a new way to edit, and FAST software. I’d like some features back. We’ll see. What’s the rush here?

I think Gruber makes sense, and I fail to see where he supports Apple – he even quotes Walter’s rant – and let’s face it, AVID were buying Walter lunch before X was announced – he was never interested in X.

If Gruber’s entirely sensible suggestion for a transition happens, sounds good to me.

Wow. And you haven’t even tried it yet? I thought more of you Shane. Of course you can’t use it for pro in/out yet, but it surely you’d like to try it before dismissing it?

What’s fair about that? You know absolutely nothing about Apple’s future plans. Some of the beta testers have spoken to Apple, how have said more is coming. Of course more is coming. Will it be everything you want? Who knows. But there’s absolutely nothing ‘fair’ about saying they were dropped. Isn’t it possible Apple just haven’t got it all working yet?

Now – if you’re asking if this was good PR by Apple – Hell no. I think they thought what they had was worth releasing, and damn the reaction. Time will tell how that plays out for them – and for the record, I don’t like it either. But please: ‘fair’. That’s exactly what you’re NOT being.

Absolutely not the case. I think the only limitation is carrying the project with the media – so if you take a drive from one computer to the other, the project opens exactly as you left it. I’ve been doing this all day. It’s quite liberating.

Walter alludes to the fact that if two people are working on the same project, and both have local media, they can’t mail the project to each other. If that’s true (I’m sure it is) this needs fixing. But for what you want, if I read you correctly, FCPX is all good. A Thunderbolt drive would round stuff off nicely.

We could do with a little less FUD here.

And I’m not a ‘defender’ – I’m giving an honest reaction to the act of editing with it. I said I’ll give it 6 months, and I will. Most people here are not giving it 6 hours. Who’s more crazy – them or me?

You mentioned H264, so I’m letting you know it’s as good natively as ProRes to work with – very fast.

Converting it won’t make it better quality. Colour correction and adjustments are now 32-bit (if I remember correctly) so it’s no longer the case that you need to convert to a 10-bit codec to get 10-bit adjustment. I was suprised how well it colour corrected. It seems ‘better’, but I haven’t tested anything properly yet.

If you want to see for yourself, give it a go. If spending the cash now seems OTT, then wait – but I’d take a lot of reaction (mine included, I’m a bit giddy after my disappointment yesterday) with a pinch of salt. At least if you’ve tried it, you’ll know for yourself. But hey – it’s not my money…

If you work a lot in H264 and output to file, give it a go. If you have a sensible system (I’m using a new iMac) its screaming fast.

I would be careful if I were another NLE manufacturer being seen shilling on user forums.
