For those of you with plugin addictions
Posted by David Roth weiss on June 18, 2011 at 2:42 amThere is something I learned the other night at the LAFCPUG meeting that might be just a bit upsetting to those of you who live and die by the massive “oodle” of plugins you’ve acquired over the years. Sorry, but THEY WON’T WORK WITH FCP X.
You see, all those very cool plugins you’ve slaved to buy are designed as 32-bit plugs, and according to Phil Hodgetts, who knows about such things, they’re kaput in the 64-bit world. He says you can take that to the bank.
I’m not telling ya’ll this to start a riot, I’m mentioning this because everyone does need to plan for at least those things you can plan for, and this is one of those things.
Okay now, no rioting… If you must evacuate the building, remain calm and exit slowly without running.

June 18, 2011 at 4:29 amNo surprise to me…went thru the same thing when After Effects went from CS4 32 bit to CS5 64 bit. Thank god I dont have many plugins for FCP 😉

Well, you were not exactly my intended audience Tom. I think there are many who might be surprised their plugins will be toast.
I can assure you, even with an advanced warning, there’s bound to a plethora of problems from people who come here wondering why their $1800 copy of Gennarts Sapphire won’t install or as brought their rig to its knees.

June 18, 2011 at 6:34 amI spoke to a company since I was interested in a few of their filters. My concern was if I purchase today, would i be charged for a FCPX version? He said no, it would be a free update to FCPX.

June 18, 2011 at 9:23 amI expected plug-ins to be the last thing to be compatible. Maybe some smaller ones never will. I also expect that the big names (maybe Genarts and Red Giant etc) will already be working with X on new versions.
Apart from stemming an NAB-without-new-FCP panic, Apple’s announcement almost certainly allowed them to seed code to big names in software and hardware, in exactly the same way as announcing iOS 5 does.
Not saying they’ll be there at launch (hey, Apple will need a couple of .0.1 releases themselves probably) but I don’t expect to wait a year for them either.
Deep breaths.

June 18, 2011 at 11:40 amThe need for plug-in updates should not surprise many people, maybe only those who have not been in the game for long enough to transition from one software release to the next. I’m sure Genarts will have a reasonable upgrade path as will other plug-in makers.

June 18, 2011 at 12:02 pmSame thing happened with the CS5 version of After Effects and I’m assuming the rest of the CS5 suite. All plug-ins ceased working and I had to buy all new ones.
That’s one reason I’ve avoided purchasing any new plug-ins over the last year because I was figuring FCP would go 64bit and cause an issue with the plugs.

June 18, 2011 at 1:50 pmIt’s actually a bit more complicated than just 64-bit. FCP7 currently supports 3 types of video effects plug-ins: FxScript, FxPlug and Quartz Composer filters ported over via FxFactory and others. If FxPlug is still supported, it will be an easier port for vendors to make FCP X – compatible plug-ins, since many have already complied for 64-bit in their AE versions. If there is no architecture or a completely new architecture, then they start from scratch.
The screen grabs of Motion don’t seem to be that radically different from before. More reorganization of the UI. One scenario could be that FxPlug filters may work in Motion, but not FCP X. Other plug-ins that FCP7 uses include Log & Transfer and various import/export modules, like Boris AAF and XML Transfer and Automatic Duck.
Another unknown is audio. There have been no leaks about STP. One of the big advantages of STP is the wealth of filters included. I suspect it’s gone, which hopefully means those filters end up in FCP X. But, we haven’t seen any screen grabs showing anything about audio mixing and filtering, other than the timeline shots. That’s a bit of a concern to me.
The lack of plug-ins was one of the big issues when iMovie was “re-invented”.

Joe, every time we do one of these exercises, even the most simple updates, we who answer questions are bombarded by surprised people, and they keep coming out of the proverbial woodwork for years after the rest of us know these things. I’m just trying to know off a few of them early, even though it may be fruitless in the long run..

Phil Hodgetts seemed convinced from what he knows of AV Frameworks that FxPlug would be toast.
[Oliver Peters] “The lack of plug-ins was one of the big issues when iMovie was “re-invented”.”
Well that clinches it, iMovie Pro can’t possibly be more advanced. 🙂
[Oliver Peters] “Another unknown is audio. There have been no leaks about STP.”
That’s entirely true, and speaks volumes about the fact that without leaks we’d all be just as crazed and fearful as we were when our heads hit the pillow after the sneak in early April.
On the other hand, since only about ten people worldwide actually use STP (yes, I know that’s a gross exaggeration that’s off by at least 20%), even the leakers knew that divulging info on the STP replacement was no guaranty they’d get the audience they hoped to garner.
