[David Roth Weiss] “[Oliver Peters] “The lack of plug-ins was one of the big issues when iMovie was “re-invented”.”

Well that clinches it, iMovie Pro can’t possibly be more advanced. :)”

LOL. I’m not trying to draw an iMovie-FCP X comparison, but rather a comparison of the two rewrite efforts. In that rewrite – headed by the same chief software architect (Randy) – the plug-in architecture was something that didn’t make it in the initial transition. That may happen again and could be due to the nature of the rewrite involved.

[Oliver Peters] “Another unknown is audio. There have been no leaks about STP. One of the big advantages of STP is the wealth of filters included.”

We dip into STP when we run into audio issues that FCP just can’t seem to address. In fact we needed it this past week to address an audio phase issue.

Of course we now have ProTools 9 in our shop so I guess it’s time for one of us to learn the basics of it so we can address basic issues when we don’t have an engineer in the house.

Has Phillip changed his mind? Back in April he wrote, “We didn’t see any title generation or filters used. Boris announced today that they planned to support Final Cut Pro X, so hopefully that means that FXplug still exists in the app. Alternatively they could have opted to support Quartz Composer for effects without an FXplug wrapper, as they’re quite similar in some ways. Even if FXplug support continues, plug-ins will need to be compiled to 64 bit before they can run in Final Cut Pro X. Filmlight have also clarified that their NAB-announced Baselight plug-in for Final Cut Pro will work with Final Cut Pro 7 and X. Good hints that FXplug survives.”

    Best,
    Geoff

I think those specific issues will be handled by FCP X’s “automatic corrections”. I actually use STP a lot as a post production DAW on short-form projects. It’s worked well. I presume I’ll shift to Audition, now. I have PT9 as well, but there’s a lot in there I don’t need, so Audition seems about right.

[Geoff Dills] “Back in April he wrote, “We didn’t see any title generation or filters used.”

If you go through his recent FCP X webinar, the comments are different. He does indicate titling tools, but they aren’t Boris.

[Geoff Dills] “Boris announced today that they planned to support Final Cut Pro X, so hopefully that means that FXplug still exists in the app. Alternatively they could have opted to support Quartz Composer for effects without an FXplug wrapper, as they’re quite similar in some ways.”

At NAB, Boris had not spoken with Apple about such specifics but the Boris engineers and Apple engineers have a good relationship. By this week, I presume a number of the 3rd party developers have had some meetings with Apple. I don’t know whether his press announcements to support FCP X are based on any actual data or rather a way of simply making a position statement. As in “Yes, of course we will support FCP X.”

If there is a plug-in architecture – and I can’t imagine there wouldn’t be – then the usual developers will get involved. After all, a company like Boris FX supports more NLE hosts than any other, so they definitely know how to port to various architectures. It’s really just a matter of how soon. For instance, is there an SDK yet with v1.0, or will that come with some patch released between 1.0 and 2.0?

    Walter,

One can only hope FCPX has OMF export or we are all in trouble. Cutting narrative here in Los Angeles, no OMF means no FCP X. I have to stick with FCP 7, which is fine because it is rock solid here.

To Clarify David, I said FXscript – the original format – will be toast (ie gone). I expect FXplug (and Quartz compositions wrapped as FXplug) to work, but with modifications.

I also don’t think most plug-in developers have been seeded yet. So it will take some time for most, but I also expect a great new plug-in set to be launched around the time of FCP X for FCP X and FCP 7.

it would make much “apple” sense to have some sort of new in-app plugins store

if done right, it could be a very cool and useful addition to FCPX.

The audio architecture seems to be exactly the same as well as the audio fx that were heralded in the peek, already exist in FCP 9, er, iMovie 11. And since it appears you can open an iMovie project in FCP X, I’d have to guess it basically the same architecture, but different feature sets.
