Walter – speedy as ever, but the spec on the Apple store is for FW800 and a dual-layer 8x superdrive.

That pretty much answers all my complaints on the 15-inch, but I don’t want a laptop that big. Why not update the spec on the 15-inch? I guess they will when they’ve finished milking the early adopters….

April 24, 2006 at 1:12 pm in reply to: a big thanks to Ben for the tc gen advice

You’re welcome. I can’t myself recommend a book or info, as I learnt the hard way from FCP 1 onwards (or was it 2?) I’m sure that others here will have some helpful recommendations. AVID friends I know have commended the FCP for AVID users book that the Apple Store sell.

I’m sure you’ll find that a good forum is more helpful than any book – this one has helped me a lot in the past (searching posts often solves it), that’s why people here like to help.

A note to anyone who owns FCS and was put off by the new Apple advice about Motion being unsupported:

It seems to work fine, at least in limited testing. Set up a PAL SD timeline, applied clouds gen, added 2 particles layers (bubbles and sparkles – reminds me of a night….. never mind) and it ran at 20 fps. I don’t have motion on my Powerbook to compare, as it never ran well, but it SEEMS quicker.

Perhaps someone who uses Motion more can give me a test to run that will trip it up, or a benchmark so they can compare it to their own system.

    So far so good!

Just thought I’d better make it clear – this was the 5.1 crossgrade I have installed.

A previous attempt to run FCP4.5 on my Intel Mini failed – I got a message about not having a supported graphics card.

I’ll run a few ‘benchmarks’ if anyone is interested.

Wow! For someone who just switched to FCP, you have NO FEAR! Now you’re capturing DV via an HDV deck at DVPROHD via a Kona LH? I thought I was crazy!

    Kudos.

No. The App has to be installed on the Mac drive. All the components required are intalled in various locations on your system, not just your apps folder. Although FCP etc. show up as one icon, they are a little more than a single file.

One of the things installed on your Mac is your registration information. Your user licence allows you to run FCS on one machine. OSX and Windows architecture would totally prohibit this type of installation for a pro app, imho. They require a degree of system integration that you could not achieve like that.

You can put the FCS media on an external drive, however.

Sounds like a settings problem. Check:

    1) On the RT tab top left of the timeline check that you don’t have ‘play base layer only’ selected on the drop-down.

    2) Under Sequence > settings > render control tab check you have the box ticked for ‘filters’. If you don’t, enable it, then go to FCP > User preferences > render control and change it there too – this sets the default for all new projects and sequences.

BTW – Don’t think 1) will really cause the problem you describe, but check it anyway.

Get to know the user preferences and system settings menu, there are plenty of things in there to help you/trip you up.

Does that help? If not, post back, and someone competent will probably answer next time. Our American helpdesk should kick in soon.

[alovelywitch] “None of my video effects seem to be working on any video clips I try them on. “

Can you be more specific? What exactly happens when you try to apply the filter. Do you have a clip selected etc.? The more info you give us, the more we can help.

The lack of a default transition is most likely that you don’t have one selected on your new install. As a default, FCP doesn’t have a transition selected. Go to your effects tab in the browser, call up whatever you want as a default, control click and select to set default transition. If you trashed the prefs, you also trashed all your customised user settings (for that is what they are….)

Don’t panic and let the Cow soothe your troubled brow. Or turn it off and on again. That helps sometimes. 😉
