April 29, 2006 at 9:43 am in reply to: How can I use my itunes library in final cut pro?

[Peter Wiggins] “I am working under a blanket music licence with a broadcaster (see below) and everybody gets paid beacuse I have a 2 PA’s that file music returns, publisher & composer details etc.

Now, If i told you how to do it, that would be illegal ;)”

I work under Sky’s blanket agreement, and spend my life burning CDs. Can you tell me?!

Since there are lots of legal circumstances where you might need to do this, why do we always have to tiptoe around this topic? The music industry earns millions of pounds/dollars a year from licenced music and blanket rights agreements. My 3000+ music library is the reason I ALWAYS take my PB to all jobs – so useful when a well-meaning AP turns up with a track you just HATE. I’m not even copying the track if all I do is convert it, surely?

I reckon Coldplay at least owe me a christmas card by now – I must have bought them a new car each from the royalties they got last summer from me. I’m SO sick of ‘fix you’…

April 29, 2006 at 9:31 am in reply to: Keying in FCP – what plugins do you recommend?

It may be an off topic response, but if you have a lot of difficult keying to do, I would consider purchasing Combustion. It’s faster and the new version now includes the Diamond Keyer, the best green-screen keyer I have ever seen. It’s also quicker than after effects, and a better workflow IMHO. If you have some time before this work starts, do consider it – you really need a good bit of compositing software, and I was able to pick up Combustion after just one day with a competent operator.

    .[Peter Wiggins] “Unlikely LOL! ;)”

Well, it’s been a few years now, since the RTMac first appeared under FCP1 – then the first SDI cards, although I’m sure people used Beta versions or something. I still don’t come across many on UK OBs, so I guess we’re both STILL early adopters. Not claiming any world’s first – we plow our own narrow furrrows, n’est pas?

That’s such a simple and interesting solution – we will make this standard practice now in the office. Thanks to all concerned – I guess I was a little too hasty…

April 25, 2006 at 9:02 am in reply to: DESPERATE!! recovering sequence for upres

[Carey Williams] ” my hard drive died with the sequence on it, but i have an exported final cut pro movie on another drive”

So – have you lost the project file or just the captured material? If you’ve lost the project file, you will probably only be able to use the exported quicktime as a guide for a re-edit. If you still have the project file, you can re-capture at uncompressed 10-bit and lay-off to digibeta no problem, as long as your original capture had correct tape timecode and reel numbers. I would find a FCP online suite with SDI capabilites and avoid going to AVID.

If you’ve lost your project file, you have a bigger problem. Let us know.

April 25, 2006 at 8:55 am in reply to: 17″ MacBook Pro released today

    [CM Creative Media] ” I’m currently using FCP 4.5 on a G4 533″

Wow – didn’t know that this met the minimum specs. You will find that FCP 5.1 works great on any Intel Mac – I have it running on a Duo Core Mini. If you are only working on DV, why not get a MacBookPro for the road, and an Imac for the office – they will both scream along compared to what you are using. One word of warning – not all plug-ins (AE particularly) work with Intel Macs yet.

Enjoy – you have a world of real-time, speedy production ahead of you!

April 25, 2006 at 8:44 am in reply to: HDV with FCP 5 on Intel iMac

[onosko] “Has anyone run it on an Intel iMac? Has anyone cut any HDV material with it?”

Yes – In fact a friend of mine who shoots a considerable amount of HDV (with a steadicam rig for corporate work) has ditched his dual 2 powermac altogether and edits all his HDV on his new iMac. He tells me that he runs HDV solidly and reliably off the internal drive – although he has exernal FW drives as well, obviously. He is now buying a Peli case for it, and planning to take it into the field for editing.

BTW – USB 2.0 drives are not suitable for video editing. They do not have the consistant transfer rates required for video work, something firewire excels at. Whilst you MAY get away with it on DV, it will struggle as soon as you push the system.

If you want a portable solution, you could also look at the new 17-inch MacBookProGeekNameThing.

We’ve been doing the EVS turn-arounds and editing daily highlights for Sky TV for a few years now. We always have a Mac at the US Open and Ryder Cup. I also use it to treat break bumpers and the like. Not sure, but I think we were one of the first companies in the UK to use FCP in a live environment – it’s not quite the game of chance it used to be!

April 24, 2006 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro 4 Fit to Window problem

Fito to window makes the video…. fit to the window!

As Tom says, resize the window to whatever you want. Try the preset screen layouts in the view menu. You will find that unless you use ‘fit to window’ you don’t get any output on your video out.

But of course! Actually George, the 17 is really too big for me too, but the specs now fit, and I can’t wait too much longer. Let’s see how it deals with some 10-bit uncompressed!
