You and the rest of the world….
1) You can’t play ’em because FCS installs a lot of other pro quicktime codecs that simply are not a part of Quick Time Player. You should install FCS on your other computers if you can (making sure to uninstall your single user licence from your other machine – for legal reasons of course). BUT:
2) Playback of uncompressed 10-bit is impossible on the systems you mention because you would need AT LEAST an external firewire 800 drive, which you couldn’t plug in to your iMac or MacBook. That’s why MacBook Pros cost so much more – that and an actual gfx card…
Why so you need to play back uncompressed 10-bit on your MacBook etc.? Just export your footage as a nice quality H.264 quicktime and it’ll look great, and work well for any client/impressing friends needs you may have!

Fundementally wrong, as Walter says. If you take the time to read the FCP manual, you would know that the express card is totally redundant. And when a forum mod on the Cow gives you some advice, it just may be right…
The Firewire bus will support the camera and the drive no problem. Just make sure you have your capture scratch disk set up right, like it says in the book and it should be ok. If you’re still having a problem, just ask.
You have got a very powerful and complete edit system – have fun with it. Be nice, and people around here may just be able to help you have more fun.

As I’ve posted here before, FCS 5.1 WILL install on a Mac Mini. Apple even clarified this in their info after a lot of complaints.
FCP runs OK – quicker than my G4 laptop anyway.
Motion DOES run – but it’s slow. You will get NO IDEA of what Motion can do from running it on a Mini, but it’s a pretty specific little program anyway. Up to you if this bothers you.
DVD Studio Pro runs OK, but pretty slow.If you want a flavour of FCP – fair enough. I use mine as a render station sometimes, but mostly I use it to listen to music.
If you have a few hundred bucks more, and want something that will be more useful for longer, the Duo Core iMac is an amazing machine for the money….

Right. I just reread this thread in the cold light of day (not at 2am after an 8 hour studio show), and you are 100 percent correct – as was Kevin. FCP does not ‘output’ sequence TC, except to an external control surface via midi.
RS-422 does however solve this guy’s problem, if it were available on an HDV deck (as it is on DVCAM decks). I suppose it comes down to Sony deciding that HDV is a pro delivery format (which it isn’t) and releasing a ‘proper’ (read expensive) HDV deck with HD-SDI out and RS-422. Be useful.

I understand what you’re saying Kevin, but surely it’s true to say that FCP can OUTPUT timecode – via RS422. In the absence of an HDV deck with -422 control, this does little to help the problem. Firewire lacks the protocols to output timecode to HDV, just as it does with DV, but that’s not FCPs fault – it’s the fault of standards commitee that made sure that DV was never anything more than a ‘prosumer’ format. Betcha Sony was on it….

For what it’s worth, I’ve made a number of retail DVD’s using compressor. If your source material is good, the results are good. Just never expect the DVD to look as good as the uncompressed footage (Mpeg 2 is pretty sucky really) and take the time to test burn a disc and view in on a TV with a decent DVD player – it gives a much better impression of the quality than viewing it on a computer. The VBR settings you describe sound fine although I have never got as far as compression markers. I was once told that most ‘hollywood’ DVDs use no more than 5Mb/s bitrates, so I suppose they have better compressors and markers…
Other people swear by Cleaner Pro, which has been around for a long time, and is still considered the industry standard.
Take a look at the DVD Studio Pro forum – that’s good advice, it’s helped me a number of times.

Note to admins – Probably need a buyers guide for all these switchers!
Let people know where you are and they can recommend their favourite resellers – but for HDV most people would probably recommend you pick up a new Mac Pro from the Apple Store – the Mac Pros seem good value, and you will only need to buy a couple of harddrives for internal storage, more Ram (Apple’s is expensive – I use crucial.com) and a copy of FCP.
FCP ships as part of Final Cut Studio that contains Motion, for creating motion gfx and text. FCP itself has a basic text generator that does static, crawl, typewriter etc and basic 3d text (non-extruded). If you want to make use of Motion, I would recommend upgrading the graphics card on the standard Apple Mac Pro spec to the ATI X1900 – but it might give you a few weeks wait. Otherwise, buy the computer with the stock gfx card (fine for fcp + one dual-link monitor) and buy the X1900 seperately and fit it when it’s available – it won’t cost you any more that way.

Still, if you comment on DH prices here, you can rest easy knowing they’ll read your comments within a couple of hours. It’s ages since they had a dissenter ‘disappeared’ anyway. If you’re lucky, they’re all on their private island counting all those $40 royalties.
