Having now purchased two items from Digital Heaven I thought I’d express my opinion.

Whip Pan – A transition that takes the the outgoing and/or incoming scenes and smears them to simulate a whip pan. A great deal at $20, and, when used in a limited manner, a very nice addition to FCP’s transitions. IMHO.

Big Time – A floating, re-sizable window that displays current timecode and can be positioned anywhere. I needed it to facilitate having a second person watching the edit, but I’m unsure how the same company who sells Whip Pan for $20 thinks Big Time should sell for twice the price, $40. Then again if you need it, it’s only $40.

One is twice the price as it is an application opposed to a filter.
If you have to worry about $40 when you have a client, you are probably not charging enough.

Can’t really see where you have the problem though, nobody forces you to buy anything..

I have to agree with Peter here. What’s the big deal about $40?

I can never understand why people get so worked up about nickel and dime stuff.

Digital Heaven developed Big Time after requests for it in this forum (and elsewhere in all likelihood). All of their plugins/applications sell for WELL below professional plugin/app prices, and they respond to the needs of users. In other words, if people don’t ask for it, they don’t make it.

You want pricey? Buy Sapphire plugins, or Final Cut Pro come to that. And I don’t think either of those is over-priced….

    Nick,

Have you tried Martin’s “Storage calculator” widget? It’s FREE!

Look at it this way. The “Big Time” is $40 bucks, but if you download the FREE storage calculator, you’ve received TWO great pieces of software for only $20 each!

Good point – used the calculator to plan purchase of our last array. Probably saved me – oh at least – $40.

I’ve no problem with $40, $400 or $4,000 if it’s a useful tool. Just making a comment. (And yes, I do charge more than enough to make the cost of most toys a non-issue — just ask my local BMW dealer.)

I love cheap, single purpose plug-ins. But that hasn’t stopped me from investing in beucoup AE plug-ins: Knoll Light, three packages from DigiEffects, FEC, Image Lounge, Red, etc. Funny that out of all of these “packages” I probably get more use out of Shine than anything else.

The great thing about this forum is that it is sooo active. All of you, especially the leaders are to be commended.

Still, if you comment on DH prices here, you can rest easy knowing they’ll read your comments within a couple of hours. It’s ages since they had a dissenter ‘disappeared’ anyway. If you’re lucky, they’re all on their private island counting all those $40 royalties.

    Walter et al

the big deal with 40 bucks is its 40 bucks. (this is not my opinion, because i agree with you), but in most cases once you have budgeted for an edit system with gear, the bean counters consider the issue closed. ie we can carve out 10 to 20 thou for FCP/g5/2tb raid (approx numbers, mileage may vary) but spending $40 here and $30 there screws up the accounting.

so now some will say “charge it to the job!” i wish it were that simple. even a 40 dollar expediture has to be so totally necessary that no amount of time (read unpaid overtime) can acheive the desired result ie why use Big Time when i can “take the time” and render my movie with a FCP TC window? its kinda like “i only need to put an engine in my car when i am going up a lot of hills, otherwise i will just push it along, even though its takes longer to get there”

again, this is not the way i would do it.

i would certainly welcome any suggestions towards dealing with this mentality, other than quitting, as i have to deal with this every day

Oh, well in THAT case. It’s been years since someone made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Hell, as long as I’m living dangerously…

It would be nice if Big Time could also display the T/C of source decks. But then again, since its getting its info through the MIDI interface this is obviously more of an FCP issue than a Big Time thing.

One Trick Pony that it is, I’ll concede that Big Time is probably worth $40. That and I like my kneecaps right where they are.

[Bob Flood] ” ie why use Big Time when i can “take the time” and render my movie with a FCP TC window”

You are missing the point here. AP’s are used to working on Avid where you can have a large timecode display.
Try getting them to squint at the timecode at the top of the canvas. So I suppose it is actually designed to save time.

Its worth $40 just to stop them asking “where is that shot” or “what time are we running to there” etc.
