  • Mac mini will it do ?

Posted by Supervideo on August 25, 2006 at 9:49 pm

I know it may be painfully slow …but I am doing most of my work on a PC and just wanted to get a taste of using the programs in the Final cut studio sweet
before buying somthing like a Mac pro .So if i were to get a Mac Mini dual core would that at least allow me to run the programs ….final cut ,live type,
dvd studio pro ect .I dont really need the stuff right now so I figured if i could learn the stuff and when I am ready which wont be for about 6 months than i woould get a Mac pro …
    thanks

Very very slow, but it would work. Not sure if Motion will install or not, no idea on the graphics card.

Have you considered a used tower? You should be able to get a dual processor G4 for under $1000, lesser machines for less.

Throw in the purchase of OS 10.4, and you’ve got a useful machine even when you upgrade to a G5.

As I’ve posted here before, FCS 5.1 WILL install on a Mac Mini. Apple even clarified this in their info after a lot of complaints.

FCP runs OK – quicker than my G4 laptop anyway.
Motion DOES run – but it’s slow. You will get NO IDEA of what Motion can do from running it on a Mini, but it’s a pretty specific little program anyway. Up to you if this bothers you.
DVD Studio Pro runs OK, but pretty slow.

If you want a flavour of FCP – fair enough. I use mine as a render station sometimes, but mostly I use it to listen to music.

If you have a few hundred bucks more, and want something that will be more useful for longer, the Duo Core iMac is an amazing machine for the money….

So would I be right to assume ,That if i go with a dual core intel mac mini .
Id be able to start learning FCP ( I use Adobe premier pro now ) I understand
they are pretty close as to the way they work ….Make a few DVD s with studio pro ..And squeeze out a 3 or 4 sec graphic with motion or live type .
If the anser is yes to all this than thats all I need right now and Id be very happy…and when the time come s to upgrade to a mac pro .I could still use the mini to do some render work instead of just sitting there !
thanks again for your replys !

About right. Although you won’t really get the ‘feel’ of motion and DVDSP will feel very sluggish. Motion is supposed to be a ‘realtime’ creation system, but it crawls on a machine without a GPU like the mini.

For FCP learning, it should be fine, and as I said, the others DO run.
